Enhancing student learning at BHHS

by Mr. Brenton Millott, Leading Teacher, Pedagogy & Assessment

At Box Hill High School, we are committed to providing the highest quality education through the BHHS Teaching and Learning Process. For quite some time, our teachers have used the BHHS Teaching and Learning Process to prepare and review our curriculum, determining what is viable to teach, and designing rubrics, resources, and assessments aligned with the curriculum. This semester, we have introduced a new school-wide process within the Teaching and Learning called ‘Moderation’ as a lens to enhance our curriculum review.

What is Moderation?

Moderation is a collaborative exercise where teachers share and develop their understanding of what high quality learning looks like. By examining a variety of student work samples from different classes and comparing them to established benchmarks, our teachers have been able to:

  • Identify trends in teaching practices that facilitate student success.
  • Share effective teaching strategies that have proven successful.
  • Enhance their understanding of how to consistently assess student work.

What are the benefits for students?

One of the significant outcomes of this process is the ability to collect, annotate and share a range of student work samples with students. By sharing what good learning looks like in each unit, we aim to encourage students to take greater ownership of their learning.

These work samples provide students with clear models to follow, enabling them to:

  • Practice independently and confidently.
  • Check their understanding against a range of different examples.
  • Self-assess their performance by comparing their work with the provided benchmarks.

We are proud of the commitment and energy our teachers have invested in this process and the positive impact it has on our students' learning experiences. At Box Hill High School, we remain dedicated to fostering a culture of excellence where every student can thrive.
