Home Group 2024

by Mr. Nic Barca, Acting Assistant Principal

At the beginning of this year, we launched our new Home Group initiative, aiming to create a positive climate for learning at Box Hill High School. This idea emerged from listening to our community and incorporating feedback on enhancing pastoral care while building on our positive education through the RESPECT program.

Our vision for the Home Group program is clear: “Strengthening students’ sense of school belonging and connectedness by prioritising time to build positive student-teacher and peer-to-peer relationships.”

To keep the program vibrant and effective, we prioritise listening to input from all stakeholders, particularly teachers and students. At the end of each term, students complete a Pulse Check survey to measure how we are tracking with the Home Group goals and to gather ideas for improvement. Recent enhancements based on this feedback include Class Captain-led activities, reduced administrative tasks and announcements, and increased student engagement with key school events.

We are pleased to report growth in all areas according to our latest Pulse Survey. However, we remain committed to continuously evolving the program, ensuring it is specialised and targeted for each year level across the school.

Looking ahead, we will run focus groups with students to further refine and evolve the program with their input. At Box Hill High School, we are passionate about making a difference in the lives of our 1500 students. Investing the time to ensure every student feels noticed and supported is crucial.

We encourage parents and carers to reach out to their child’s Home Group teacher for any support needed. They can guide students to the right resources, whether it’s the Sub School, Wellbeing team, or another teacher.

While we are still perfecting the Home Group program, it’s fantastic to see improvement in our data and increased engagement. We are committed to taking the time to get it right.
