Library news

New Books!

This week we received three brand new BOX SETS of some of our most loved manga series! To the great delight of our dedicated readers, we now have One Piece volumes 01-46 and Dragon Ball Z volumes 1-26. Our Graphic Novel genre is popular at Box Hill High School and provides great opportunities for students to develop their visual and written literacy skills.  And while these new books have already been perused by many a keen reader, we also received books from an array of other genres too, so have MANY recommendations for a great holiday read!

BIOEYES

On Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June, the library hosted Monash University who delivered a workshop for students involved in the Victorian High Ability Program. Students came into the library to attend a two-hour workshop where they studied live zebra fish, their eggs and their larvae under the microscope. They were introduced to complex topics like genetics, learned how closely related these animals are to humans and why these animals are being used in biomedical research.

Students also learned that Monash University Victoria has the biggest aquarium of these fish in the southern hemisphere.

Library Loyalty Card

At the end of last term, we launched our new Library Loyalty Card program. All students who borrowed books are offered a loyalty card in the colour of their house and each time they borrowed a book, they not only earned five house points but also received a special stamp. When five stamps had been earned, students were awarded an additional 20 house points and went into a prize draw to win a larger prize.

A massive congratulations to Selva in Year 7 who was the second lucky Term 2 winner of our Library Loyalty Card Program. Selva selected a new book and earned BLACKBURN House an additional 50 house points.

If you have not yet got your Loyalty Card, come in and request yours before the holidays!  HAPPY READING EVERYONE!

Knitting for Babies

We would like to send out a massive thank you to everyone who spent time knitting beanies for babies from the pattern supplied in the last edition of Out of the Box

Our Library Technician Ying Yu who runs our Knitting and Crocheting Club made a head start to demonstrate what these gorgeous little beanies looked like and this clearly inspired our fabulous creative BHHS community to start knitting.

Our first batch was collected a few weeks ago and have already received a new bag of creations. Please keep them coming 😊

If you love knitting and would like to contribute to this special project, the pattern has been shared again (see below). You can drop off your knitted beanies to our Front Office where we will ensure they are delivered.

Chess Tournament

We love chess here at Box Hill High School and so, to celebrate the end of Term 2, we will be organising and hosting two chess tournaments. The first will be our Interschool Chess Tournament where Blackburn, East Doncaster and Box Hill High School will battle it out on the chess boards.

We hope this tournament will provide an opportunity for students to connect with people who share an interest in chess, and that it will encourage an interest in chess generally. Most of all we hope it will be an enjoyable experience for all involved. The tournament will be played at Blackburn High School and each school will have a first, second and third chess champion to celebrate at the end of the day.

The following day, we will host another chess tournament just for our BHHS students. Again, students will battle to take the title of Box Hill High School first, second and third place, chess champions. A massive thank you to Mr. Bailey who is our resident chess guru here at BHHS. The time to organise, adjudicate and run these events is so greatly appreciated.

Maths Games Day

For the third year running, the library will transform from a literary oasis to a mathematical arena when it hosts the Maths Games Day 2024. Running across the last three days in Term 2, each full day will cater for different year levels including a day for Grade 5 and 6; a day for Year 7 and 8 and a day for Year 9 and 10.

Students from a range of schools from as far as Emerald, Portland, Clayton, and Bundoora will travel to BHHS to compete, collaborate and immerse themselves in maths puzzles and challenges with other young mathematicians.

Each of the three full day workshops will be run by Andrew Lorimer-Durham from ThinkSquare and the Math Association of Victoria. We know that these days are fantastic opportunities for students, and we are very excited to be hosting these events again in 2024.

Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing holiday.

Happy Reading!

The Library Team 😊
