Junior School report

by Mr. Nic Barca, Head of Junior School

What a huge 11-week term it has been for our Junior School students! We have witnessed tremendous growth and vibrancy in every classroom. At this point in the year, we see peer relationships further develop and flourish.

We began the term with high expectations, continuing our positive education themes of positive relationships and gratitude. Our two incursions, UR Strong and Brainstorm Productions, have actively engaged students, equipping them with skills and strategies to support them both in and out of the classroom.

I would like to take a moment to thank the incredible Junior School team for their dedication over the last semester. Ms. Emily Wilkinson has carefully looked after our Year 7 students with great consideration, often going above and beyond with innovative initiatives. At the start of the term, she conducted a homework and organisation workshop, equipping students with essential skills for productive learning at home.

Our Year 8 Coordinator, Ms. Bec Kertes, has strengthened her cohort by running organisation master classes, Home Group morning teas, and numerous restorative conversations to foster positive interactions.

Ms. Zeng, our Assistant Coordinator, has devoted a great deal of time to connecting with all Junior School students with additional needs by checking in and collaborating with classroom teachers. She also led our badminton and basketball tournaments—a full wrap-up of the event is included in this newsletter.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge Kiran, our admin support. Her ongoing organisation has been invaluable, helping track attendance, processing events, and supporting our wonderful students during recess and lunch.

As we head into Term 3 and Semester 2, I would like to inform parents of a few important points:

Subject Selection: This process will occur in Term 3 and can be stressful and confusing. I encourage students and parents to read the upcoming information, set reminders, shortlist elective subjects, and reach out to the Junior School for advice if needed. Early in Term 3, we will launch a Junior School Subject Expo, providing students with detailed information on all subject offerings to make informed choices.

Lockers: A small number of students are either not locking their lockers or do not have a lock. Beginning next term, we will remove the contents of these unlocked lockers and insist that students protect their belongings responsibly.

Positive Routines: I recommend parents re-evaluate the importance of maintaining healthy routines at home, including a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and effective study habits. Reducing technology use, particularly social media, should be a priority. Junior School students are still learning to use social media appropriately and require careful supervision. Next term, we will offer a series of cyber safety workshops, at minimal cost to families, to assist in this area.

I thank every student and parent/guardian for their partnership this term. I look forward to a wonderful break and a productive Semester 2.
