Glenroy College Arts Festival

The Arts are celebrated at Glenroy College!

Glenroy College Arts Festival- a roaring success!

Congratulations to everyone whose creative endeavors were shared with the Glenroy College community through this year’s Arts Festival.

Growth was demonstrated in the visual artists from last year’s Art show by a rising level of knowledge and skill. Dominant to the exhibition was two magnificent works, a homage to the artist Rothko, by Ahida Allouche, dramatic in their bold use of color and size. They set the tone for the entire show. Perennial favorite student artist, Linda Kheir, again submitted two sensitive paintings, beautifully and emotively exploring the challenges of peer assimilation. Art Show Winner and Principals Award Winner, Prince Paudel had 3 pencil and print art works, all attracting recognition for his exceptional fine line art skills. Social comment was highly visible in the work made by our creatives: reference to the Banana painting controversy, reference to Melbourne street artist Birdie, the debate between artificial and natural; all ideas played out in paintings on the PAC wall. Joining the works of individual students were the print and painted collaborative works by the senior class – a challenging task indeed!

Media students were tested with using existing school promotional photos and creating a new poster to advertise the Glenroy College. Bilal Mahmoud took out honors with his clear dramatic poster and terrific choice of features of the college. But he was not alone in catching the judges eye as two other students were awarded Highly Commended for their excellent placement of objects/images and text.

Students entertained the audience with their dramatic and musical talents!

The Concert saw some of last year’s performers joined by new instrumental students and junior drama students. Classical music met popular music with performances by instrumental students against hits by Glass Animals, Queen, Ariana Grande. The Glenroy College band made its debut playing the Beatles classic, Come together, and with drummer, Abraham Ledy winning the People’s Choice award for his outstanding musicianship. Houssain Cheik expanded his original stand up comedy routine to become one of the hosts for the performance, so dominating the stage that the other host, Chris Clarke, was lucky to get two sentences in!

The new Theatre Arts Performing Group performed a short skit finding unexpected connection with strangers through personal choices. The real winner for this evening was everyone who participated, as the ambience was warm and encouraging and welcoming for a second year in a row.

Tech students work on display at the College Arts Show

Technology students added a depth to the arts display with their toys with a developmental element. Showcased in a glass cabinet, many a young person could be seen itching to play with them! (The chair toy for building arm muscles was secretly tried by a few!) The cleverness and thoughtfulness of the designs was appreciated by many show visitors.

The feature of Food Technology was the delightful light refreshments – made on site by our senior students and served by the senior students too! The mini quiches were my favorite. Food Tech displayed posters of the wonderful cooking students engage in. There was also a table with packets of junior cookies on display. Some of the completed student textiles graced the Technology table, demonstrating everyone can sew.

The Arts Festival was delayed this year due to school improvement works. It was a little smaller than last years, but definitely a festival that I am very proud of. Thank you to all the teachers in the Arts that contributed their knowledge, skills, support and drive to get the show up. Thank you Technology teachers for jumping in with your thought provoking displays and terrific food. And Bravo and thank you to all the brilliant creative students whose inspired work made this show so good.
