Science

Preps

Students have been communicating with each other explaining their observations and wonderings about a variety of science experiments.  Furthermore, they also supported their peers to explain their investigations.  We used droppers to observe surface tension on our counters  and explained what happened. We reviewed different science topics, props and big books that introduced us to stars and planets, rocks, geodes and stones, dinosaur fossils, soil, oil and gas, sea and sky, seed and grass, wind, hurricanes, volcanoes, tornados, earthquakes and snow, the study of trees, butterflies and bees.

Students held mini presentations and explained to an audience what they knew about different topics and shared new understandings and new knowledge.  We certainly do have a few experts in a variety of fields.

Grades 1 & 2

Students have been completing mini science projects and are learning to present simple presentations, arguments, reports and graphical representations. Some topics that students are investigating are;  dinosaurs, bacteria, endangered animals, spiders, time, Sydney Funnel Web Spiders, gems, the Earth, plants, spider venom, snakes, whales, baby turtles, the human body, space, the solar system, volcanoes, telescopes, venus flytraps, germs, lightning strikes, bouncing balls, oceans, snails, litter, animals, hedgehogs, frogs, science books, foxes, fish, orcas, flowers, Arctic Cubs, black holes, Capybaras, dogs, monkeys, sharks, dolphins, reed pens, shells, and rabbits.  Everyone has been busy researching information books and using laptops to research facts and details on Kiddle. (Google for Kids)

Grades 3 & 4

Student have been investigating the human body and it's parts and identifying their purpose. We are communicating our ideas, processes and designs and are collaborating to illustrate different organs and systems.  Students are using project based learning techniques.  We had to think about;  How can we represent functions of the organs of the human body?  How do we use block and redstone in Minecraft Education to represent the function of the body parts?  How can we show what we have learned about the human body in our Minecraft Education World?  We are  using ICT to support new knowledge. Students have created signs that explain facts and details about their human bodies next to their designs.

Grades 5 & 6

Students have been analysing and reflecting on data and graphs. We reviewed different data and graphs about coffee drinkers, a day in the life of a US teen, maximum annual temperatures in Australia, Australia's Annual Climate Statement 2023 and Australia's average weather.  Students compared line graphs, histograms, pie charts, bar graphs and scatterplots and reviewed our graph checklist.   Students chose various topics and recorded data.  To make our graphs talk and tell a story, they analysed their own data, reflected on it, interpreted it and shared their results to tell a story to accurately represent patterns and relationships in data.
