Stage 1 News

What a busy term we've had in our Stage One classroom! Last week, the students enjoyed watching the new movie 'Inside Out 2,' which reminded us all of the importance of understanding our emotions and building positive relationships. We've also been fortunate to have Rachael Phillips doing her practical with us; she loved working with the children and was impressed by the warm welcome from all the students. We invite you to explore and celebrate all the wonderful work your children have been doing in each KLA showcased below.

ENGLISH:

In the past two weeks in English, Stage One has been reading the picture books 'The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name' by Sandhya Parappukkaran and 'Hark, It's Me, Ruby Lee!' by Lisa Shanahan. We explored how characters’ feelings and traits are shown through their interactions with the world around them. The children created artwork to paint their interpretations of Ruby Lee, depicting how she felt, what she liked, and what they thought she looked like.

Ruby Lee has lots of friends. She is always happy because Ruby Lee loves to do handstands.

Ruby Lee loves tadpoles, humming and handstands. She gets excited when she does activities. Ruby Lee likes to do activities with her friends. She has a good imagination. Ruby Lee has orange hair with buns. She is bad at remembering. Ruby Lee is as nice as a cat.

Ruby Lee has beautiful auburn hair that shines in the sun. She loves hopping and doing handstands, and especially helping. Ruby loves helping. She is jealous when the other people in her class get to be the messenger. She is creative as an artist. Ruby Lee has ginormous eyes, however she is forgetful.

Ruby Lee feels sad because the teacher didn’t give her a good job. She loves doing hand-stands, singing and humming. Ruby Lee is forgetful as an imaginative cat. When the teacher said to do a job she forgets. Ruby Lee looks like a queen. She has orange hair and skin as white as snow.

Ruby Lee loves humming, peaches and she loves to help. She feels happy and excited every day. Ruby Lee is adventurous and imaginative because she makes believe places in her head. She is very coy. Ruby Lee has orange hair. Ruby Lee just heard about the messenger. She had to be still as a statue. Ruby Lee was finally the messenger and she was so happy!! Ruby Lee was helpful; she needed to take one of her classmates to the office.

MATHS:

In the past two weeks in Maths, Stage One has been learning about grouping, combining, and separating numbers. The children have been practicing different strategies to add and subtract, using objects, drawings, words, and symbols to explain their thinking. They discovered that the order in which numbers are combined doesn't change the result and explored how addition and subtraction are related. They also practiced adding numbers up to 10 and 20 and used repeated addition to understand the basics of multiplication.

DANCE:

The week has finally arrived. This Friday, at assembly, the Possums and Magpies get to perform their dance they have been practising since Week One of this term. We have some very excited dancers among us who cannot wait to share with you all their spectacular moves.

Dance this term has been such a fun part of the week for both us teachers and the students. We are so proud of how far the students have come, especially with how well they can perform moves, keep in time with the music, and most of all have fun.

EXCURSION

Last week, Stage One students went on a NAIDOC excursion to Bulargaranda (Mount Yarrowyck). We embarked on an incredible journey to experience and learn about Aboriginal history first hand. The highlight of our trip was a bushwalk to a stunning Aboriginal art site. As we trekked through the beautiful landscape, we were filled with excitement and curiosity.

Along our bushwalk, we were lucky enough to be guided by two National Park officers who shared fascinating stories about the Anaiwan people, explaining the meanings and significance behind the artwork. We learned how these artworks told stories of their ancestors, culture, and connection to the land.
