Primary Regional Cross Country

Plenty Valley Christian College was blessed to have four young athletes earn the right to represent themselves, and our College, at the recent Primary Regional (Northern Metropolitan) Cross Country Championships. They earned this right by finishing in the top 12 positions at the Division Cross Country event held a few weeks ago.

The event was hosted at the Kilmore Racing Club on Wednesday 19 July on a sunny, yet chilly, day.

Unfortunately, Malachi R was unable to attend these championships due to being on a wonderful family holiday however, the other three athletes, Mila C, Ella W, and Jonny S, ran boldly in what were trying running conditions.

With the top 12 runners qualifying for the Primary State Championships, Mila C came 16th and Ella W came 38th, out of 67 total runners, in the 9/10-year-old girls’ event (2000m): this is a magnificent effort for both girls and a credit to the additional training they did between the various carnivals. Ultimately, the experience will hold them in great stead to continue running well during the 2025 primary cross-country season.

In what was a stunning, consistent run, Jonny S came 4th out of 64 total runners (3000m). This follows on from his previous 1st (school), 2nd (District) and 2nd (Division) positions. Amazingly, in his race, two runners crossed the finish in equal first position; quite an incredible outcome for an event raced over 3km. Jonny has now qualified for the Primary State Championships; something he did in 2023 as well. All the best, Jonny, for your run at the State event.

Middle-distance running is inherently tricky; it can be uncomfortable however, there is a growing interest in this form of running within the primary student cohort. We had more students participate in the 800m and 1500m events for our athletics carnival, and more students completing our school cross country events without needing to stop. I encourage families to have a conversation with their children and ascertain whether they have an interest in developing the fortitude, and stamina, for middle-distance running. If they do, perhaps you can support their interest by encouraging them to go for jogs on tracks local to you so that when our 2025 cross-country season comes around, they are prepared to really have a go at improving their personal best results, and perhaps seeking to qualify for the District carnival at a minimum.

Primary District Athletics

Congratulations to the students listed for qualifying to represent the College, and themselves, at the District Athletics Carnival (29 August) to be held next term.

These students have qualified by achieving top 1-4 positions in the events held for our Junior Primary Athletics Carnival. The main carnival was held early in term 2, which included long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, and sprint events, and then other events (800m, 1500m, and high jump) were held throughout term 2. We had a lot of enthusiasm for the various events.

I wish all the students in the District Athletics team all the best for that carnival. I encourage them to make time to practice so they are as prepared as possible for when District Athletics comes around.
