Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG)
IN THE KITCHEN...
Last week we had a great time making gnocchi, both traditional gnocchi from potatoes and a spinach and ricotta version with a tomato and basil sauce. They were delicious and so much better than pre-prepared and bought from the supermarket! We also used some of our fresh heirloom lettuce leaves in a lettuce and orange salad.
Celebration meal
This week, students voted on their favourite dishes from the semester and we had a celebration meal of fresh pasta with a seasonal tomato, silverbeet and herb sauce, watermelon salad and apple crumble with ice cream as a treat!
We have completed a whole semester with the 3/4 students and it is our hope that they have learnt new skills and have new knowledge that will hold them in the future.
If you are a parent of a child who has participated in SAKG, we would love you to complete the parent survey (take #3 - I do apologise that the first 2 links did not work... and I thought I was so clever creating a form!!!)

"My children love helping me in the kitchen."
"Thank you for all the hard work put into running the program. Love it!"
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are also looking for volunteers to help next semester with the Year 5/6 students. If you are free on Tuesdays between 11.30am and 1.30pm, please join us in the garden or kitchen. You just need a current Working with Children Check. You do not need to have a child in the Y5/6 cohort.

IN THE GARDEN...
WOW! What a great semester we have had in the garden. We began the year with only a few plants in the garden and now only one bed is not planted out and the others are positively thriving. The students have really enjoyed harvesting vegies and herbs from the garden for the kitchen group to use each week and then eating what they have grown in whatever exciting dish we shared for lunch. They've all gained their tool license using a variety of tools and also their wheelbarrow one by bringing mulch to top up the garden beds. Well done 3/4s.
Last week, due to the weather, they completed some work in their books about activities that from earlier in the term along with their individual SAKGP survey of the program. All the feedback was positive and weeding along with washing up were the two least liked things they had to do but they did their jobs very well.
This week we planted some more carrot seeds which came in strips which will save thinning out as they grow. Leeks and cress were also planted and beds were prepared ready for Semester 2. Lots of weeding, cutting back, watering and pulling out was done too. A very busy morning! Finally it was time to adjourn for our celebration lunch which was very yummy.
Bunnings Notting Hill is a fantastic supporter of our SAKG program. They continue to provide donations and fantastic resources for our students. Please support Bunnings Notting Hill in your next project at home!
