Naidoc Week
Let’s all celebrate NAIDOC WEEK 7th–14th July
NAIDOC week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, whilst sharing these histories and oldest, continuous living cultures with all Australians. It’s also a time for all Australians to learn more about the rich history of First Nations peoples, and to appreciate the deep connection they have with this land and the care they have given it over many generations.
The acronym NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’.
The 2024 theme for NAIDOC week is Keep the fire burning! Blak Loud and Proud. This theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with the fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

*Listening to an Aboriginal song
*Watching an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance
*Talking to your child about Acknowledgement of Country and what it means to them. Maybe your child will share their own Acknowledgement to Country from school
*Learning and playing an Aboriginal game together
*Looking at some Aboriginal artwork or take part in some dot painting or rock painting
*Sharing picture books written by Australia’s indigenous people
*Watching movies and shows that feature First Nations stories
*Learning the traditional names of the land you live on and its owners
*Have respectful conversations with the First Nations people in your life about their culture
