Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a great term of teaching and learning.
I would like to thank our community for being involved in our school on many levels; through open mornings, participation and organisation of fundraising events, involvement in school council and PFA, and classroom participation. Much gratitude to you all.
When it comes to teaching and learning, we are on the right path. Carnegie Primary school has already embraced, and is implementing the evidence informed reading practices being mandated from 2025.
An interesting announcement in the media last week:
“All Victorian state schools will embrace phonics from next year as the government tries to improve reading levels in prep to year 2 students across the state. The government has announced an updated Teaching and Learning Model for all government schools to be implemented from next year that focuses on what's known as "explicit teaching".
Students from prep to grade 2 will be taught reading using synthetic phonics, which helps students break up words into individual sounds. Teachers will spend a minimum of 25 minutes a day on explicit teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness in classrooms.
All Victorian state schools will be required to use this approach when teaching reading.”
Congratulations to our ‘early adopters’ - curious and dedicated teachers who have worked hard to learn and make the changes.
Our teachers have been analysing student achievement data and comparing progress against the Victorian Curriculum for the semester one school reports. Reports will be visible to all parents on Compass on Wednesday 26th. If you are unable to view the semester report, please contact your child’s teacher and they will be able to guide you. The report remains on the Compass portal whilst your child is enrolled at Carnegie PS. Please remember to download the reports to your devices before your child leaves the school.
I will be taking 5 weeks of LSL from 15th August - 13th September. Karen Bentata Grimm will take on the role of acting Principal and Amanda Miller will continue to support as Acting Assistant Principal.
Our Business Manager, Pip, will also be taking some well-deserved long service leave. We wholeheartedly support her decision to take this time for herself and recharge. During Pip's absence, the School Administration and Support Hub (SASH) team will be stepping in to oversee and manage the school's financial matters. Rest assured, they are well-equipped and committed to maintaining the high standards of financial management that Pip has instilled within our school.
Should you have any questions or concerns during this transition, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office team.
This weeks 'winner’ was Hazel from 3A who was incredibly enthusiastic in participating in the club. Congratulations!
The last day of term 2 is next Friday 28th June. The children finish school at 2.30pm. They will be dismissed from their classrooms. I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing all again on Monday 15th July when we commence another great term. I hope you can take the opportunity to rest a little and enjoy a change of pace, on these cooler days, with family and friends.

I wish to acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which this is being read and pay my respects to elders past present and emerging. I wish to acknowledge our First Nations people and pay respects to them. I note further that these lands were never ceded and are, and always will be, Aboriginal Lands.
