CBL and Wellbeing

As we continue to learn about 'community' we will begin to build towards our challenge to 'connect with the young people in our community', students will consider a variety of community groups and how they change and evolve over time.

To support your child at home you could discuss  you could share stories about your own childhood community and discuss how things might have been different when you were younger. This helps children understand how communities grow, change and stay connected.

In Wellbeing this week students will meet members of Victoria Police who will teach students about e-bike and e-scooter safety. The session will focus on important road rules, safe riding behaviours and how to stay safe when travelling in the community. This is a valuable opportunity for students to learn how to make responsible and safe choices when using bikes and scooters.

To support your child at home, if your child rides a bike or scooter, take some time to discuss road safety rules together. Remind them about the importance of wearing a helmet, being aware of traffic and pedestrians, and riding safely in shared spaces.

Literacy

We are continuing to explore our mentor text, Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten by Bob Graham, this week. Our focus will be on finding evidence in the text when responding to comprehension questions and answering in full sentences. Students will also be identifying the purpose of dialogue and how it is used effectively in narrative writing. As part of our reading discussions, students will make connections between the text and the real world, linking to our Big Idea of “Community” and exploring themes of kindness, courage and not judging others before we know them.

To support your child at home when reading together and asking questions about their reading encourage them to point to the sentence that proves their answer. If they respond with a short answer, prompt them to restate the question.

In Writing this week, all students will complete a practice NAPLAN timed writing task under test conditions to help build confidence and stamina in preparation for the assessment on Wednesday morning. Later in the week, we will revisit narrative writing with a focus on crafting meaningful dialogue between characters to develop personality and move the story forward.

To support your child at home when reading books together, look for examples of dialogue and talk about how the characters’ words show their feelings or personality. Your child could also write a short conversation between two characters (for example, a superhero and a villain or two friends solving a problem) to practice using speech in their writing.

Maths

In Grade 3, students will continue their focus on general mathematics concepts while completing practice timed NAPLAN assessments. The emphasis will be on reading each question carefully, identifying key information, and building confidence in working through problems within a formal testing environment. We are encouraging students to show their working and apply problem-solving strategies thoughtfully.

In Grade 4, students will continue their learning on ‘time’, with a focus on calculating the duration of events and determining elapsed time. Students will practise using number lines, timelines and written strategies to solve real-world time problems.

To support your child at home please encourage them to utilise Mathletics, where they have been assigned tasks which connect to their learning at school. All students will benefit from solving time maths problems such as:

During car trips ask questions like:

  • “We left home at 8:40am and arrived at school at 8:55am. How long did the trip take?”
  • “If we leave the house at 4:10pm and the trip takes 20 minutes, what time will we arrive?"

When Cooking you could ask questions like:

  • Set a timer for 15 minutes and ask: What time will it be when the timer finishes?
  • If something cooks for 25 minutes starting at 6:10pm, ask your child when it will be ready.
