Reading Pockets - this Friday!
UFLI Passage
Students will bring home their Reading Pocket on Friday. Inside will be a UFLI passage called I Sit, I Tap that includes the letters and sounds we have been learning in class. Please support your child to read the passage by sounding out the letters and then blending them together to read the word. If they are able to read the word straight away without sounding it out, that’s great too.
Some tips:
- Reading is a new skill that students have only just begun practising. It is completely okay if your child needs your support as they learn.
- If your child finds the length of the passage a little tricky, feel free to focus on one sentence at a time. We want every child to feel successful.
- Please place the passage into the plastic sleeve provided in the Book Pocket. We will send the passage home ready to go, but it will need to be slipped into the sleeve.
- A new passage will come home next Wednesday. Please continue to re-read this first passage. Repeat reading is important to build fluency and sight words (words that can be read without decoding).
Please note: Decodable books will be sent home early in Term 2.
Reading Log
Once your child has read the UFLI passage, please record it in their Blue Reading Log. We will check these each Friday.
Thank you for supporting home reading - it makes such a difference in building your child’s confidence and love of reading!

We would also appreciate this link being filled in to help us with planning for the session. Thank you!

Social Story - Playing outside
We have created this social story to support students who may need a little extra guidance with playing outside. While we have shared it with students in class, you are welcome to read and discuss it with your child at home if you think it would be helpful.

CURRICULUM
Reminder: we are beginning our learning at 9am, with our play-based time in the afternoon. Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.
Phonics and reading
We are learning about the letters F and I.
Our learning focus will include:
- Understanding the phonemes (the sound each letter makes)
- Learning the cued articulation for these sounds
- Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
- Practising the graphemes (the way we write the letter), including correct letter formation
- Reading and writing 3 letter words using the sounds we know
What can you do at home?
• Support your child to read the decodable passage in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.
•Ask your child to tell you the sounds that F and I make, and to show you the cued articulation.
• Use the letters A, M, S, T, P, F and I to build and read simple three-letter words together.
• Enjoy bedtime stories together to build vocabulary, comprehension and a love of reading.
• Work through the optional UFLI pages. If you would like to do this, we have attached an explanation of how the pages work below:
Optional UFLI Home Practice Pages:
Literature: reading responses and writing
Our mentor text is Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun by Maria Dismondy. We have chosen this story to align with our CBL focus of recognising and appreciating the qualities of others. Students will review the story elements of character, setting and plot. They will develop their speaking and listening skills by analysing pictures from the story to discuss how the characters might be feeling, and connecting these emotions to their own experiences. Students will also explore the main character and discuss her character traits. Through a CBL lens, students will be introduced to Venn diagrams and learn how we can use them to identify what is similar and different about the people in our classroom community.
In writing, students will continue developing their fine motor control. They will practise using a functional pencil grip while forming the letters F and I, focusing on correct entry and exit points. We will also continue to sound out and write CVC words using the sounds we know, and students will start writing short, dictated sentences.
🏡 What can you do at home?
•Practice letter formation of F and I using crayons, pencils, or even finger tracing in sand.
•Provide activities that build hand strength and coordination, such as playing with playdough, threading beads or using tweezers to pick up small objects.
•Write some 3 letter words using the taught sounds - A, M, S, T, P, F, I
Maths
We are continuing our focus on counting and place value. Students will practise subitising collections to 5, counting collections to 10, and matching collections to their numerals. They will also begin representing numbers to 10 using a ten frame.
🏡 What can you do at home?
• Count everyday objects together and encourage your child to point to them to support 1-1 correspondence.
•Practise subitising by quickly showing your child small groups of objects (like 3–5 toys or fingers) and asking, “How many did you see?” without counting.
•Use an egg carton to help your child place objects in the spaces and show numbers to 10, then ask questions like “How many are there?”
Wellbeing
Our SWPBS focus this week is Be Safe outside by choosing games that do not involve tackling or physical contact. In Respectful Relationships, students will participate in bullying prevention activities and engage with picture storybooks that support respectful and safe behaviour.
