School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports

Supporting Positive Behaviour at School:
Active Supervision
As part of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) rollout, we are continuing to introduce strategies that help create safe, supportive and engaging learning environments for all students. One important practice we use across classrooms and playgrounds is called Active Supervision.
Active supervision means that staff are actively present, aware and engaged with students throughout the day. When adults are visible and interacting with students, it helps create a calm and positive environment where students feel supported to make positive choices.
Research shows that when adults move around, observe students closely and interact with them regularly, students are more likely to stay engaged in learning and follow school expectations.
Working together as staff
Across the school, our year level teams are working in their Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to strengthen how we use Active Supervision. In these teams, teachers work collaboratively to reflect on classroom practices, share strategies and ensure that students experience consistent expectations and support across the school.
By working together in PLCs, staff are able to focus on practical strategies that help students stay engaged, feel supported and develop positive behaviour habits.
What does Active Supervision look like?
Staff use three simple strategies:
Moving
Teachers and staff move around the classroom and playground rather than staying in one place. By circulating through learning spaces, they can support students, answer questions and build positive relationships.
Scanning
Staff regularly look around to check how students are going. This helps them quickly notice when a student may need help, encouragement or a reminder about expectations.
Interacting
Adults interact frequently with students by:
Offering encouragement and praise when students demonstrate positive behaviour
Providing reminders about expectations when needed
Supporting students with their learning tasks
Building positive relationships through conversation and interest in students
Why is this important?
Active supervision helps us to:
Increase student engagement in learning
Encourage positive behaviour
Provide support quickly when students need help
Build strong relationships between staff and students
Create a safe and positive learning environment
You may hear staff giving specific positive feedback when students demonstrate behaviours such as being kind, safe and ready to learn. Recognising these behaviours helps reinforce them and supports students to develop strong social and learning skills.
Working together
Our goal is to create the best possible environment for students to learn, grow and develop responsible behaviour. Through SWPBS and strategies such as Active Supervision, we aim to support every child to feel successful and connected at school.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to build a positive school community together.
