Leadership updates and reflections

An update from Julie:

Change to Assembly Schedule

After a review of our Monday afternoon programs, our school assemblies will move from a fortnightly schedule to once a month. Assemblies will continue to be a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate student achievements, recognise birthdays, and hear updates from our Student Voice and Green Team representatives. This change will also help ensure that our multi-age Connections group sessions can run more consistently, supporting valuable opportunities for students to connect, collaborate and build relationships across year levels. Our next whole school assembly will be held in the last week of term, on Monday, March 30th.  We have a special presentation to make to Kathy Tongi, who has been our much-loved crossing supervisor on Jumping Creek Road for 33 years!

NAPLAN for Grades 3 and 5

Over the next two weeks our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students will complete the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). It is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents and carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.

NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

Parents may have seen in the news that there were issues around connectivity that disrupted the first writing assessment for Grade 5, 7 and 9 students across the State this morning. Our Year 3 students did a wonderful job today completing their writing assessment on paper. Our Grade 5 students will undertake their online writing assessment tomorrow.

Disability and Inclusion:

Supporting Children with Daily School Experiences

Many children experience moments in the school day that can feel challenging – such as transitions between activities, changes to routine, assessments, excursions or even safety drills.

The team at AllPlay Learn have created a helpful collection of practical strategies to support children with these everyday experiences. The resource provides simple ideas for families to help children prepare for common school situations, build confidence, and develop coping strategies when things feel overwhelming.

For example, the strategies include ways to:

  • help children manage transitions during the day
  • prepare for changes to routines or relief teachers
  • support children with homework or assessments
  • prepare for excursions, camps, and safety drills

These resources are designed for families of children with developmental differences, but many of the strategies are helpful for all children as they learn to navigate the routines and expectations of school life.

Child Safety:

Early Collection of Students :

To support the safety and wellbeing of all students, we kindly ask that if your child needs to be collected before the end of the school day by someone other than a parent or carer, the school is provided with prior permission from a parent.

This helps us ensure that all early collections are authorised and that we are releasing students safely to approved adults.

If you need someone else to collect your child, please contact the office or notify your child’s teacher in advance.

Thank you for your support in helping us keep our students safe.

Safer Together

Helping children navigate the online world safely is a shared responsibility between families, schools and the wider community. The Safer Together resource provides practical guidance for parents and carers on supporting children to use technology in safe, respectful and responsible ways.

The resource offers helpful tips on topics such as setting online boundaries, having conversations about digital behaviour, managing screen time, and supporting children if they encounter challenges online.

Families are encouraged to explore the resource and use it as a starting point for ongoing conversations at home about safe and positive online experiences.

You can access the resource here: Safer Together https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/resources/safer-together
