In the classroom this week...

Prep students will practise drawing different types of flowers. They will use oil pastels to draw a variety of sized flowers on white paper and paint each section with water colour paints.

Grade 1 students will be finishing off their Kusama inspired stitching, adding felt mushrooms and buttons for a variety of textures.

Grade 2 students will be practising to draw Kusama inspired flowers and using bingo daubers they will decorate their flower and background with dots of all colours.

Grade 3/4 students will be finishing off their white ‘Obliteration Rooms’ before adding dot stickers of all sizes, all over their work!

Grade 5 students will be building the armature of their 3D mushroom. They will use paper plates and bowls, paper towel rolls and masking tape to shape their design.

Grade 6 students will create the background for their pumpkin drawing. Looking at tessellations, they will collage a design using contrasting colours and geometric shapes.

Performing Arts

Prep students are exploring the musical element of dynamics (loud and soft). Through songs, movement and percussion instruments, they will learn to recognise the difference between soft and loud sounds and demonstrate these using their voices and bodies.

Year 1 students will continue building their understanding of rhythm, practising how to read and perform rhythms using taa and ti-ti. They will work on keeping a steady beat while clapping and playing percussion instruments with the rhythm pattern 'ti-ti, taa'.

Year 2 students will review previously learned rhythms (taa, ti-ti and zaa) before exploring the idea of long and short sounds in music. They will begin to notice how different note lengths fit within the beat as they clap, play and perform rhythms together.

Years 3–6 students will continue their bucket drumming unit, focusing on learning to read bucket drumming notation so they can communicate and perform rhythms together. Students will practise recognising symbols that show which hand to use and which part of the bucket to strike, helping them read, perform and stay together as an ensemble.

Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

This week, students will watch the Auslan Storybooks version of The Very Cranky Bear. Students will focus on recognising animals and showing emotions using facial expression, gesture and body movement. They will respond to the story through miming and drawing, learning how important non-manual features (facial expression and body language) are in Auslan communication.

Grade 3 and 4

This week in Auslan, our Year 3 and 4 students will watch the Auslan Storybooks version of The Wrong Book. Students will focus on identifying repeated signs and high-frequency phrases in the story, and discuss how these translate to English. They will explore how facial expression and other non-manual features add meaning in storytelling, and notice how changes in expression can influence interpretation and understanding.

Grade 5 and 6

This week in Auslan, our Year 6 students will finalise their step-by-step instructions they planned and rehearsed last week. Using sequential signs, students will clearly explain how to complete a task while maintaining appropriate facial expression and signing clarity. They will then present to their classmates, building their confidence and expressive skills in the process.

STEM

Grade 1/2

This week, continuing their learning about animals and habitats, students are exploring how we can care for and protect the places where living things live. They are creating a poster that shows a habitat and explains ways people can help keep it healthy.

Grade 3/4

This week, Grade 3/4 students are investigating weather and the seasons, revising their understanding that seasons are influenced by the Earth’s movement. They are also learning how scientists and meteorologists measure and record weather conditions such as temperature, rainfall and wind. To apply their learning, students will design  an invention that can measure either rainfall or wind strength, encouraging them to think creatively about how scientific tools are designed and used.

Grade 5/6

This week, Grade 5/6 students are beginning our next unit exploring natural disasters. Students are learning how earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur and how these natural events can reshape the land and affect the atmosphere. To demonstrate their understanding, students will create a storyboard that illustrates the process of either an earthquake or a volcanic eruption, using labelled diagrams to explain each stage.
