Red Chief Local Aboriginal Land Council Gunnedah National Women’s Day
During Women’s Week in March, students from St Xavier’s and St Mary’s College Gunnedah were fortunate enough to be able to take part in meaningful cultural activities at the local Red Chief Local Aboriginal Land Council, facilitated by the Galuma-li Dhawun Rangers. The day celebrated the strength, leadership and resilience of Aboriginal women while strengthening students’ connection to culture, creativity and Country. Through hands-on workshops in weaving, jewellery making and painting, students expressed themselves artistically and created pieces of personal significance.
The experience nurtured pride, confidence and a deep sense of belonging. It provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage with peers and Elders within the community. We sincerely thank the Galuma-li Dhawun Rangers for delivering such a memorable and inspiring celebration of women.

TAMWORTH LOCAL ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCIL CAREERS ON COUNTRY
St Mary’s College Gunnedah and McCarthy Catholic College Tamworth Year 9–12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students recently attended the Careers on Country Expo at Trelawney Station Somerton. The careers expo was organised by the Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council and began both mornings with a reflective and spiritual Welcome to Country and Smoking. On the first day Uncle Len shared his story of a young boy who learnt about the importance of being different and knowing his own strengths while on second Uncle Jo Craigie, spoke about the importance of creating connections, having meaningful conversations with organisations, and being present and fully engaged in every opportunity. Throughout the day, students explored a variety of career pathways by engaging with industry representatives, community organisations, and training providers. They participated in hands-on activities and discussions highlighting careers in areas such as Police, NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue, Australian Defence Force, Early Childcare, TAFE NSW, University of New England, University of Newcastle, Health Services, and Aboriginal Community Services.
The experience encouraged students to consider their future aspirations while strengthening their connection to culture and Country. Students returned inspired, with a greater awareness of opportunities and confidence in planning their future pathways.
Experiences like Careers on Country are vital in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to build confidence, strengthen their cultural connections and develop a genuine understanding that career pathways and culture can come together in meaningful ways.
