NCS students help ‘Clean Up’ Australia!

Small hands, big impact.

On Friday  27 February, our primary students swapped their books and pencils for gloves and bags to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. From the oval to the covered areas, our campus is looking pristine thanks to our young eco-warriors. It was more than just picking up rubbish; it was about taking pride in our school and protecting our local environment.

A huge shout-out to all the students (and teachers!) who helped make a difference today. Let's keep those bins busy and our playground beautiful!

A Community Effort: Year 10 ‘Clean Up’ Worrigee Nature Reserve

During Friday afternoon sport in Week 4, Year 10 students walked down to Worrigee Nature Reserve to assist in the clean up of some native bushland. Emily Atton, a local ranger from NSW National Parks met us there and equipped our team with garbage bags and gloves.

After a safety briefing and a short bushwalk we arrived at our target destination; a section of bush that backs on to the Worrigee shops. Many large bags of rubbish were filled in the limited time we had available. Students were cheerful and happy to help, sacrificing a bit of their time and energy to serve our community. The bush was left in a much better state than how we found it.

This clean up event contributed to a broader effort being made to help bring Worrigee Nature Reserve up to standard. Our current Year 11 students played a part, cleaning up a section of the reserve in December last year. Other volunteers in the community and our local National Park rangers continue to contribute.

Thank you Year 10 for playing your part!

NCS Students Take on OzCLO Challenge

On Wednesday 4 March, sixteen of our secondary students participated in the highly challenging Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO).

OzCLO is a unique, code-cracking event that tests students' logical thinking rather than their prior knowledge. Working in teams of four to tackle a rigorous two-hour paper, the students were tasked with:

  • Decoding the Unfamiliar: Analyzing phrases from lesser-known languages or communication systems (this year: Zeiglography, Bislama, Welsh, Ahamb and Tlicho Yatii) alongside their English translations.
  • Pattern Recognition: Using logic to identify linguistic patterns and deduce meaning.
  • Translation: Matching foreign phrases to English, translating new sentences, and even writing English phrases back into the target language.

During the event, all students maintained an impressive level of focus, with several teams successfully solving multiple complex problems. Our returning students, drawing on their experience from last year, were able to hit the ground running, maximising their allotted time.

We are incredibly proud of all of our participants for their dedication and perseverance.

“I really loved working with my team and trying to decipher all the different puzzles!” – Ava“It was a great, hard challenge!” – Will

“It was very much a challenge but also very satisfying to finish a problem.” – Kent

"It's a phenomenal experience. I mean, you're not really going to finish, and you're not really in the running to win, but that's not why you're here. You're here to do the crazily difficult problem solving. If you've not got a problem with quadruple checking your work, and enjoy some good pattern recognition, I'd absolutely recommend, it's good fun." – Harvey

Unearthing the Jewel: Our Year 6 Leaders Shine at CRU FIT

This week, our Year 6 CRU leaders travelled to Calderwood Christian School to participate in CRU FIT, an enriching leadership event that brought together students from nine Christian schools across our region.

The theme for the day was "Leaders Love the Bible." Through a series of engaging talks, practical workshops, and collaborative activities, our students explored how the Bible serves as a foundation for leadership. Beyond the training, it was a wonderful opportunity for our leaders to build community, make new friends, and, of course, enjoy a delicious morning tea together.

Student Reflections

Our students returned with some wonderful insights from the day:

Ruby: "I learnt that the Bible is like a jewel."

Amelia: "I learnt that reading the Bible doesn't automatically make you a Christian."

Aurora: "I learnt how to remember a memory verse in a really fun way!"

Kiara: "I liked praying for other schools."

Annie: "I liked it when the guy did the magic trick and reading the Bible."

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the CRU Team for organizing such a high-quality event and for their ongoing commitment to equipping young leaders.

A special thank you also goes to Mrs McNeil, who kindly drove the school bus and ensured our team arrived safely and on time. We look forward to seeing our Year 6 students apply these new leadership skills and their love for the Bible within our school community.

Codie Smashed PB!

Gallery Image

On Thursday, 5 March, Codie M from Year 5 travelled to SOPAC at Homebush, Sydney to compete in CSSA Primary State Swimming in 50m boys backstroke.

After enduring an evacuation from the pool for an hour due to a fire alarm, Codie and his family were finally allowed back inside the facility. They then had a long wait for Codie's race which began at a revised time of 8:30p.m. He swam a personal best time in his race finishing in 47 seconds flat! That is almost 4 seconds faster then his time at zone, and much quicker than his time at school. He finished his heat in first place, which was his goal before going!

His super quick finishing time meant his overall placement was 10th out of 21 in his age group. This is an amazing result for Codie and we are proud as punch of his achievements in the pool. He enjoys swimming squads outside school, trying hard each occasion to better his previous best times for each stroke and distance.

Special thanks to Codie's biggest supporters, including his dad and mum who travelled to the event especially to watch Cody's race.

Well done, Codie for your achievements in the pool this year! It will soon be time for a well earned rest!

A Great Few Days doing Renewable Electricity!

In Week 6, three of our motivated Year 10 students, Jonathan Spinks, Lachlan Blackmore and Josh Sneesby had a terrific three days learning about the renewable energy sector at TAFE and Simmark North Nowra.

We would like to thank the Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP) for providing the opportunity and the NSW Department of Education Trade Readiness Program, along with  Matt & Jake from Simmark Electrical. The boys really enjoyed the three days finding it engaging and relevant to their career goals.

On Wednesday, 11 February, I attended a CIS cricket trial at Cricket Central in Sydney. It was an excellent day, during which I gave my very best effort throughout the trial. Unfortunately, I was not selected for the team. Nevertheless, I remain eligible to trial again next year. Despite the outcome, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a valuable opportunity to compete at such a high level of cricket. - Caleb Mc (Year 11)
