Learning Update

From Mr Collins 2-6
Another few big weeks have passed as we build towards NAPLAN. In the classroom we have been mostly looking at the writing side of things and talking about timing. Kids write at different speeds, so it has been extremely valuable to look at the timing of the testing so that we can work out what we can achieve.
Another event over the last 2 weeks was the Campaspe Cluster Swimming Carnival. Another amazing day where our kids showed tremendous resilience and gave every race their best shot. I'm pleased to say that for the first time ever, we placed in the top 3 for both of our relays.
Open Water Day
On Tuesday Mr Sait drove us to the Crusoe Reservoir for Open Water Safety Day. What an amazing experience it was for all of the kids. The teachers taught them about being safe around the water, rescuing people and even took them through some introductory CPR lessons.
Literacy
Expository texts have been at the forefront of our learning lately, with the kids gaining passion to argue their opinions on familiar subjects. We've looked at the organisation of these texts and focused on paragraphing them to make them easier to read.
Numeracy
Numeracy has moved on to a deep focus on addition and subtraction. We have looked at their relationship and are working toward both our instant recall of simple facts and written methods to solve larger problems. We have studied angles and the properties of different shapes. We worked on a dance to help us remember the names of the angles, and the kids are recalling them quite accurately.
The Resilience Project
This week's focus in TRP has been on empathy. We delved into the meaning of empathy, what it looks like and why it is important. The kids were asked to choose the 5 most important aspects to empathy that they consistently follow, and then one they could improve at.
From Ms Lehre P-2
Week 5 and 6 have been busy in the P–2 classroom! Students had lots of fun making biscuit monsters, decorating their biscuits with colourful icing and lollies — they looked amazing (and tasted delicious!).
Literacy Updates
In English, we have been learning about adjectives and how they describe a noun and make our writing more interesting. Students have been practising using describing words in their writing, creating a huge classroom collage, and even writing and illustrating their very own stories.
Last week, while the senior students attended swimming sports in Elmore, our P–2 students enjoyed a special visit from Frank, which was a big hit with everyone!
Numeracy Updates
In Maths, we have been working hard on addition and subtraction. This photo is from our timed speed challenge, where students answered 10 questions against the clock. You might notice the cardboard dividers — these helped everyone focus on their own work.
To top it all off, students explored shaving cream sensory play!
