January Training Camps & Term 1 Commencement

It has been a busy and productive start to the year for Kinross Wolaroi Rowing. With two intensive training camps completed during January and structured training commencing from the first day back of Term 1, our athletes have truly hit the ground running in preparation for a significant term of racing.

Early January Rowing Camp – Penrith

A squad of 42 dedicated Kinross Wolaroi rowers recently returned from a highly successful Early January training camp in Penrith. Despite challenging heatwave conditions, the group demonstrated outstanding commitment, front-loading their mornings with sharp, purposeful sessions on the Sydney International Regatta Centre course.

A highlight of the camp was a private tour of the Rowing Australia Women’s National Training Centre. Our athletes had the opportunity to engage with Australian Olympians, gaining valuable insight into elite training environments and performance pathways through meaningful conversations and feedback.

As always, our traditional skit night proved a standout off-water activity, showcasing creativity, enthusiasm, and the strong culture within the squad. We were also fortunate to reconnect with Kinross Wolaroi alumnus and Australian Under-23 rower Alec Hoskin, who generously assisted with trailer logistics and spent time speaking with our athletes. Alec’s willingness to share his experiences was greatly appreciated and highly valued by the group.

Overall, the early January Camp was defined by hard work, resilience, and shared experiences—setting a strong foundation for the season ahead.

Late January Training Camp

Our late January Camp saw the entire rowing squad return for an intensive five-day training block. Blessed with excellent weather throughout the week, athletes completed three sessions per day encompassing on-water rowing, strength and conditioning, ergometer work, stretching, mindfulness, and team-based activities. The camp culminated in a full-squad run to the summit of Mount Canobolas—a challenging but rewarding experience that tested both physical and mental resilience.

I would like to sincerely thank Emily Williams, new staff member Niamh Mulveney, Rory Golden, Brittany Wills, and Lachie Barrett for giving up their time during the holiday period to support these camps. In particular, Emily Williams was outstanding in her role as our much-appreciated “Rowing Mum” during the early January Camp.

My thanks also extend to Marcus Kostich and the Catering Team; Dave Stedman and the Facilities Team; James Perrin, Nathan Short, Lee Taylor, and Rob Bell for accommodating our rowers in the boarding houses; and our dedicated coaching staff, whose professionalism and commitment ensured both camps ran smoothly and successfully.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to the Rowing Squad for dedicating their holidays to training and making the sacrifices required to pursue excellence. Their efforts have placed us in a strong position heading into our first regatta of Term 1—the King’s/PLC Regatta this coming Saturday.

Best wishes to all rowers competing this weekend, and the Rowing Team wishes all of our summer sporting teams the best of luck in their upcoming fixtures.
