Kalinda Library News Term 1
How do we want the library feel?
Over the last two weeks, we’ve been discussing how we want our library sessions to feel. The words and ideas that came up again and again were:
Calm: browsing books, reading alone or quietly with a partner, the turning of pages, walking, quiet conversations
Respectful: walking instead of running, being gentle with books, sitting on furniture, putting books and furniture back where they started, not overwhelming the library monitors
Enjoyable: browsing the huge collection of books and finding one that looks interesting, asking Martina or friends to recommend a new book, trying a new series, listening to a story as a class
Lunch Clubs are back!
The library is open five days a week for students who need a change of pace from the playground, or who want to try something new. There’s something for everyone!
Monday: Puzzles & Games (including chess!)
Tuesday: Writing Group (gr 3-6), Marrung Club
Wednesday: Quiet Club (reading, drawing, colouring, quiet lego, etc)
Thursday: Puzzles & Games (including chess!)
Friday: Quiet Club (reading, drawing, colouring, quiet lego, etc)
Reading with older kids
Did you know that by the tween years, children are less likely to read for enjoyment? But the academic, social, and emotional benefits of reading for pleasure don’t diminish, so it’s important to continue encouraging our older kids to read.
How is Kalinda encouraging reading?
Grades 3-6 at Kalinda are exposed to a wide variety of texts and text types, both within the classroom and during their library sessions. Students are encouraged to read for pleasure every day, as well as reading texts as part of the curriculum - individually, in small groups, or as a class. Kalinda teachers also regularly read aloud to and with our middle and senior students, whether it be a class novel, an informational text, or a picture book.
In 2026, our year 2-6 classrooms are also home to amazing classroom libraries. These libraries have been carefully curated with a variety of text types, levels, topics and styles to ensure that every child always has access at their fingertips to books on a topic that interests them, at the right level. We are so thrilled to have amazing resource available to our middle and senior kids!
These classroom libraries will complement the students’ regular library sessions, where they will be able to borrow books both for their book-boxes, and to bring home.
