Welcome to a new school year at Essex Heights Primary School. I’m looking forward to another year of supporting students to build confidence, understanding and enjoyment in mathematics, alongside their classroom teachers.

Families play an important role in supporting numeracy learning at home. The Victorian Government has developed practical, easy-to-use guides that show how everyday activities can help develop mathematical thinking.

For families with younger children:

https://www.vic.gov.au/how-build-your-childs-numeracy-skills-birth-grade-2

This resource focuses on early number skills through play, routines and simple everyday experiences.

For families with students in Years 3 to 6:

https://www.vic.gov.au/how-build-your-childs-numeracy-skills-grades-3-6

This guide shows how numeracy can be supported through real-world activities such as cooking, shopping, measuring and problem solving.

If you have questions about the mathematics your child is learning or their progress, the classroom teacher is the first point of contact. For more specific numeracy enquiries, parents are welcome to contact me via Compass.

I’m looking forward to an exciting year of learning in 2026.

Matific Access

As advised in your Compass News Feed, we are excited to let EHPS families know that access to Matific has been extended to all students this year.

Matific is a high-quality online mathematics learning platform, developed with guidance from leading researchers at universities including Berkeley, Harvard, MIT and Stanford. It is an integral part of our mathematics program and supports students to develop strong conceptual understanding through engaging, meaningful tasks. In my experience, Matific is the most effective online mathematics platform I have used to support student learning. Students will complete Matific activities weekly, either in the classroom and or at home. Expectations will vary by year level, and class teachers will clarify how Matific is used in their class.

Refer to the short parent letter that explains how Matific works, what students will be doing, and how families can support learning at home attached to the Compass News Feed message. The letter also introduces the Matific Parent Zone, where parents can view student progress and access helpful resources.

As advised via Compass, login details will be sent home over the coming weeks. Prep students may receive their details a little later as they settle into school routines.
