National Threatened Species Day

National Threatened Species Day on the 7 September raises awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction. Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 of our animal and plant species have become extinct.

The Climate Canons observed National Threatened Species Day on Tuesday 9th September with a recess event challenging students to find out information about Australia’s most vulnerable species and guessing the remaining numbers of species left in the wild, it’s pretty shocking! Students also participated in a Homeroom quiz, testing their knowledge on the threats facing our most vulnerable species. Thank you to the Homeroom that go involved and congratulations to K5, P5, and M6 on achieving the top results.

Save the Koala Month

September is Save The Koala Month which culminates on Save the Koala Day on the 30th September. It is a great opportunity to raise awareness about koalas and their habitat, the threats they face and how we can protect them. Nearly 6,382 koalas are estimated to have perished in the megafires of the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season and we all have a role to play in protecting this beautiful marsupial.

Students participated in a Blooket quiz to learn more about the dangers facing koala populations and congratulations to Phoenix Ishiguchi (T7), Levi Buthelho (T7) and Gyanbi Shrestha (P4) for achieving top results in the quiz. At lunchtime on Monday 16th September students engaged in activities to better understand koala habitats and habits.

Containers for Change House Challenge

Term 4 will see Crocodile verses Penguin, Tiger versus Kangaroo and Magpies swooping to find lost containers for change as the Climate Canons host a House competition to see which House can collect the most amount of correct containers that can be recycled through the Containers for Change program. One of the Climate Canons goals is to encourage positive changes in behaviour, and correctly recycling is a big part of that. The House with the most correct containers will be rewarded a prize. You will find the new collection bins out the front of Café 135 so get recycling!

Clothes Swap

Thank you to everyone who donated clothes for the College’s first Clothes Swap. The Climate Canons are very excited for this event happening on Wednesday 16th October in the Xanten Performing Arts Foyer. Please see the flyer attached to this newsletter for details, check your direct messages or email danielle.pisconeri@norbert.wa.edu.au if you have questions. We look forward to welcoming you all to this event and remember you can still get involved by making a $2 donation to the Christmas Appeal on the day.

Remembrance Day

Several decades have passed since the Armistice that ended World War 1. Originally named Armistice Day, the Australian and British governments renamed the 11th of November to Remembrance Day.

On the 11th of November each year, the College commemorates Remembrance Day with an assembly to acknowledge the sacrifice people have gone through in times of war and civil unrest.

We have established a memorial war to honour those living and deceased who have been involved in war activity and military service. If you would like to include a family member's name on our wall, please email the name of the person, their role/position and the student this person is connected to by Wednesday 6th November to danielle.pisconeri@norbert.wa.edu.au and the name will be included.

Year 7 Ancient History

The Year 7 History classes have been learning about Ancient Egypt this term. Class 2 were willing participants in the intriguing afterlife process that dominated Ancient Egyptian lives. The ancient ritual of mummification came alive during the final week of Term 3 with students enacting the mummification process and enduring the lengthy steps to continue on life after death. BP2 was visited by the Ancient Gods and Goddesses of Horus, Anubis and Isis; natron (salt) was used to prepare the body; tools were at the ready to remove the organs to be placed in canopic jars and the heart of the deceased was weighed against a feather to determine whether or not they had been good in this life. Our mummies were successful in passing onto the afterlife and this hands on experience supported the learning that happened throughout the term. Well done to the students in Class 2 who were good actors and participants in this fascinating ritual.

Swan Changemakers Conference

As technology continues to connect us, youth are becoming ever more engaged in the issues facing society faces and are in a greater position to create change. In recognition of this and as a way to harness the voices of local young people, Pawsey and Zaneta Mascarenhas MP co-hosted a Young Changemakers Conference on Tuesday 17 September for Year 11 students from high schools in the Federal electorate of Swan. Students participated in speed networking activities discussing topics impacting young people and then discussed issues and solutions to take to Parliament. Thank you to Zaneta Mascarenhas and her team for an engaging event and congratulations to Georgette Guinto, Isabella Ngoon, Ariana Mecham and Gyanbi Shrestha who were excellent ambassadors of the College.
