Appropriate use of ICT at the College

The College is experiencing a growing number of incidents related to the misuse of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources. One of the key concerns is the increasing use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and personal phone hotspots by students to bypass the College's network security measures. This behaviour has a significant impact on the integrity and safety of the College's digital environment.

VPNs and personal phone hotspots allow users to circumvent the College’s monitored network, creating risks such as exposing the College’s systems to malicious attacks, reducing the effectiveness of internet filtering, and enabling access to inappropriate or restricted content. Furthermore, this not only undermines the College’s efforts to maintain a safe and secure learning environment but also violates the guidelines set forth in the College’s ICT Technology Use Policy.

As outlined in the College’s ICT Technology Use Policy, students must refrain from the following:

  • accessing networks without proper authorisation
  • bypassing the College network via personal hotspots etc
  • using what the College deems to be offensive or inappropriate SSID or user ID names.

This Policy can be accessed via SEQTA Documents, and we encourage all families and students to familiarize themselves with its contents.

Please be aware that student use of VPNs or personal phone hotspots in violation of the College’s ICT policy will result in a consequence such as a rostered detention. This response is designed to safeguard the integrity of the College’s ICT environment and ensure that all students can benefit from a safe and conducive learning space.

We urge students to adhere to the ICT guidelines and make responsible choices when using technology at school.
