Year 10 News

Tasmania Camp
At the end of last term, 53 Churchill and Morwell Year 10 students and staff attended our Tasmania Camp. The week started at 4:30 am Monday morning, with many bleary-eyed people gathering at the Morwell Campus ready to board a coach destined for the Melbourne Airport. Staff and students then boarded a Virgin Australia flight to Hobart Airport. The week was jam packed with activities, including minigolf, a trip to Port Arthur Historic Site, museum and art gallery exhibition, plenty of sightseeing, an afternoon at Cataract Gorge, several shopping expeditions, plenty of good food and a surprise trip to the snow on our first day. Before heading to Devonport to board the Spirit of Tasmania, for our overnight return trip. Arriving safely back in Geelong at 6:00 am, before disembarking and boarding a coach returning to the Morwell Campus. Students and staff had a great time, even with the seasickness on the boat trip back.
ABC Takeover
Earlier this year, we participated in a writing workshop with ABC Takeover. The aim of the program is to develop and highlight positive stories about youth in the media instead of the negative ones that we are constantly bombarded with. From the initial workshops, students were given the opportunity to submit their stories for appraisal, and successful applicants would be selected from this process to have their stories developed further. Of that, we had seven students from Churchill Campus who were selected from hundreds of entries and showcased at the Takeover week.
Congratulations to Rory, Claire, Arabella,
Ty, Aurelia, Molly and Jenny.
Road to Zero
On Thursday 17th October, Year 10 students attend the T.A.C. Road to Zero interactive exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. The day was a great opportunity to learn about road safety and initiatives being implemented to assist in bringing the road toll down. Students had a great day and represented the college with pride.
2025 Pathway
If your student did not attend our Course Counselling session last term and still does not have a pathway for 2025, please contact our College Careers Team to arrange an appointment and discuss further.
VET Orientation Day
If your student has selected to undertake a VET course as part of their VCE/VCEVM, there will be a compulsory orientation day on Wednesday 27th November. Further details will be sent to individual students regarding times, location, etc. If you have any questions please contact the VET Coordinator, Sarah Pedlow, at the University Campus.
Year 10 Formal
Year 10 Formal is scheduled to take place in the function room at the Churchill Hotel on Thursday 21st of November, as a celebration of student’s time at the Junior Campus before they transition to the Senior Campus the following week. The night is a student only event and allows the opportunity for all to come together for one final celebration and reflect on their time over the years. This is not a compulsory event but has always been popular and a nice way to end this chapter of their lives…not to mention a great excuse to get dressed up. Further details will be available in the coming days.
Senior Campus HeadStart
Students will commence their senior schooling on Monday 25th of November, at the University Campus. This is a compulsory two-week program that will introduce students to senior schooling and begin work for the following year. During this time students will receive their timetables, get to meet their teachers, and commence work for the 2025 school year. If you have any questions, please contact Todd Miller, Year 10 Team Leader, on 5132 3700. Or the University Campus on 5132 3800.
Donations
With Year 10s about to depart the junior campus and begin their senior schooling years, we are asking any families who no longer have a use for the college uniform and wish to donate it back to the college to support other students and families to please drop any unwanted uniform pieces in at our office to be recycled and repurposed.
Youth Design Summit
The opportunities for Latrobe Valley’s mine lands.
In October, about 30 students attended a Youth design Summit at the Tech School with Ms Anders and Ms Groves. The purpose of the day was to investigate and have an authentic say in what could happen to the Latrobe Valley mine lands when our power stations close. The mine lands include all of the land surrounding the mines. Program organisers from Fed Uni and the Mine owners wanted our values reflected in the decisions made about the future of these sites.
"We used a design thinking process to learn about and explore a range of different possibilities. They were interested in our opinions as it is our future being impacted by the decisions. We got to ‘speed date’ with a range of industry experts to get insight into a range of perspectives and got to understand that there are many career opportunities in mine rehabilitation. We presented our ideas to Fed Uni and power station representatives and staff. Our presentations included Minecraft, 3D modelling, concept art and prototypes. They were recorded and will be taken into account along with other community consultations as decisions are made about how to use the mine lands in the future.
Overall, there was a lot to take in over the two days. We learned a lot about mine rehabilitation and how we can have a genuine impact on the future of the Latrobe Valley. We developed skills in using a design thinking process and using a range of technologies in multi-modal presentations. We also got to know and work with students from our other campus and students from other schools. We enjoyed our two days of authentic learning."

Art
9/10 Concept art
The 3D art class has been exploring themed building using construction foam, MDF board, paddle pop sticks, hot glue, paint and various other materials. Students have chosen a dramatic event that has caused damage to their building. Students have intentionally built damage into their creations to match the dramatic event they have chosen.
9/10 Concept art
The concept art class have been exploring themed characters, cropping and layout with a large grid. Students have chosen a medium they are comfortable with, to add details and decorations to their themed characters.
