Welcome to Term 4!

This is our students last term as the youngsters of the school, and I know I’m feeling nostalgic as I walk through the corridor and reflect on their growth, not only in learning, but as people. I am so impressed with how the year 7’s conduct themselves in the school, their classes and the community.

We have seen some magnificent achievements both at school, and in the broader community, and we couldn’t be prouder! This term marks the end of their high school transition journey as they move into the year 8 space during HeadStart and I have no doubts they will continue to uphold the pillars of our school: Work Ethic, Engagement, Relationships and Excellence.

Student Recap

This term we had a BBQ at lunch to celebrate Live 4 Life and this week we are celebrating Aboriginal Language week. I am looking forward to the year 7’s going swimming in week 6 on Tuesday and Friday. I’m also looking forward for GUMBUYA world at the end of term the 11 of December that is on a Wednesday. – Oskah Hudson 7C

Strzelecki Showtime

Congratulations to Charlotte Holcombe who recently performed in the Strzelecki Showtime. Charlotte looked very tired after a huge successful weekend of performing, dancing and singing!

New Students

We have had a huge number of new students this term, welcome to all our new families!

To provide a new student message we have a note from Georgia Davey 7B:

My name is Georgia, and I am a new student at Kurnai College. I have had lots of positive experiences at my new school. The KPA shop is one of my favourite things here as it is where they reward you for good behaviour, you can buy things such as icy poles or fidget toys! The English program is good because they do English in a way that helps me understand. The teachers are amazing at this school because they are so nice and helpful, they just listen to what I say and don’t talk over me. I’m looking forward to Gumbuya world at the end of year because I love swimming so much it is just so fun. Luckily, I get to go swimming this term in week 6 and on the second day it’s my (birthday). My transition was fun and easy the people here are nice to be around. The students and teachers (especially my friends) have been so helpful and kind.

Upcoming Events

Year 7’s have an extremely busy few weeks ahead. Alongside their pupil free days, they also have school swimming for 2 whole days in week 6. On Tuesday 12th and Thursday 14th November students will be travelling via bus to Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre to participate in 2 days of swimming skills. The permission form and further details are available via COMPASS.

On the 25th November 20 year 7’s will be participating in an orienteering program at Lake Hyland. More information about this will be available soon.

Kurnai College and the Smith Family are also working together to deliver the Passport program to our local feeder schools. Selected students will be visiting both Churchill Primary and Churchill North Primary School to share their transition to high school experiences and answer any questions.

Year 7’s will begin HeadStart in week 9, this is when they will meet their new teachers and have an opportunity to follow their 2025 timetable. They will also meet their new team leader and say goodbye to the year 7 centre. We have been discussing these changes in form group and whilst a bit apprehensive, the students are excited for the transition to year 8!

2025 Year 7 Orientation

For those families who have a new year 7 starting next year, as per our school orientation program, we will be hosting the 2025 year 7 students for three days Friday 6th, Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th of December. I expect our current year 7’s will be exceptional role models for the incoming cohort!

We will also be hosting a parent information night for the new year 7 families on Tuesday 10th December at 6pm. A flyer with all our Orientation and Parent Information will be going out in the post this week.

Uniform

As we head into the warmer months, a small reminder that the school uniform includes: Any navy shorts (mid-thigh length) and our school polo, this can be the old burgundy polo or the new navy polo. We are also seeing an increase in students wearing the school dress, this is also a part of our school uniform and it’s exciting to hear students talking about bringing back the uniform staple.

KPA Champions

Congratulations to our highest KPA receivers this term:

  • Blake Russell
  • Isabella McKellar
  • Macy McCausland
  • Jun Wei Tan

Contact

As the year draws to a close, students are getting tired and less tolerant or resilient, it’s been a long year! If your student is experiencing any issues with other students or even at home, please remember to reach out and let us know so we can provide the necessary support at school.

Art

The year 7’s have been working on their puppy dog sculptures over the last few weeks, using recycling items, masking tape, plaster strips and paint.
