Year Three
Dear Year Three Community,
A big thank you to you all for all your support in what has been another busy term of learning for our Year Three cohort.
Reading
In Reading, students have been focusing on Synthesising. This is when we use our prior knowledge and new information from the text to explain your thinking about a text.
They have been reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to practise synthesising using our raindrop to guide their thinking.
Writing
In Writing, students have explored procedure texts. A Procedure text is a type of text that is written to explain how to do something. It's a step-by-step explanation of a process or a set of instructions for completing a specific task.
This week, students have been exposed to a variety of mentor texts to help gain an understanding of how to write a well-structured procedural text.
Students have written procedural texts based on the following topics below.
- How to brush your teeth
- How to wash your hands
- How to wash a woolly mammoth
- How to make a disgusting sandwich
Students have also learnt how to use verbs in their writing to describe the action for each step of their procedure.
Mathematics
In Maths, we have been exploring the concept of chance and probability. Students have been learning about the likelihood of different events occurring, conducting various chance experiments, and investigating possible outcomes while observing how results can vary. They have enjoyed conducting the experiments using spinners, dice and coins.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students are looking into forces and simple machines. Over the last fortnight, students developed a better understanding of an inclined plane, wheel/axle, lever, pulley, screw and wedge. Students completed various interactive activities to build on their learning and see these items in action with real world examples.
When students return from break, they will be using this knowledge to help make a simple machine that uses these concepts to get an item from one end of the classroom to another. As part of their exploration students are to bring in recycled materials, which they will use for experiments throughout the two week period. Some suggestions include:
- Cardboard boxes (no larger than a shoebox/cereal box)
- Bottles
- Toothpicks
- Lids/caps
- Cups/plates
- Magnets
- Straws
- Wool
- String
Watch the video below made by one of our students to learn more about Simple Machines.
Swimming
-Students enjoyed their 5 sessions of swimming lessons at Saltwater Swim School. We are proud of the principled manner in which they represented our school.
Reminders
-Students are expected to bring their fully charged iPads to school every day.
-Late arrivals (8:40 am onwards) require a late pass from the office.
-A reminder that school hats are compulsory for all students to wear hats during recess and lunch this term,
-Please make sure all the student absences are recorded on Xuno.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday break,
Year Three Teaching Team
