Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families

We’re excited to kick off the final term with a fantastic start! Our students have been fully engaged in their learning and are showing incredible enthusiasm for the activities and lessons. Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been focusing on this week.

Term 4 Week One

Mathematics:

This week, our focus has been on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students explored the relationship between 50%, 0.5, and 1/2 and applied this knowledge to practical problems. We’ll continue working on making these connections and using them to solve real-world problems.

How you can help at home:

  • You can help by asking your child to explain how they convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages in everyday situations. For example, ask them how much 50% off would save you on an item, or how they could split a fraction of a pizza or recipe.

English:

This week, students began reading the novel Can You See Me. The story has sparked thoughtful discussions about themes like empathy and understanding differences, and we’ve started diving into the characters’ experiences. As we continue reading, students will work on identifying key themes, analysing characters' motivations, and making inferences about the text.

In writing, our focus has been on expanding sentences using “because,” “but,” and “so.” We’re working to make sentences more detailed and clear. Students were also introduced to persuasive writing and they’ve started drafting arguments on various topics. This term, they will learn how to structure persuasive texts effectively, building strong points to convince their readers.

How you can help at home:

  • Encourage your child to share their thoughts about the book. Ask them questions like, “What do you think the characters are feeling?” or “Why do you think the author included that part of the story?

Religious Education:

In Religion, students completed a pre-assessment on 'The Kingdom of Heaven.' They learned that promoting peace, respecting human dignity, and participating in the common good are essential for building a better world.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students have been learning how to sign different colors. They practiced using these signs in conversations.

SEL

In our SEL lessons, students have been focusing on problem-solving and understanding when to seek help. They are learning to identify problems they can solve independently, those where they can benefit from a peer's help, and those that require adult assistance.

Integrated Studies:

This week in Integrated Studies, we focused on the concept of beat. Students practiced keeping a steady beat and explored how it forms the foundation of many musical compositions.
