YEAR 3

FROM THE CLASSROOM

Despite only having a two-day week in the classroom, students have enjoyed a productive and engaging week of learning.

MATHEMATICS

This week, students explored length and measurement. They became familiar with units of measurement, including millimetres, centimetres, and metres, and used rulers to measure a variety of objects around the classroom. This hands-on learning helped students develop their understanding of measuring and comparing lengths.

READING

In Reading, students continued exploring the text 'World's Kitchen', which introduces recipes from different cultures around the world. This has provided opportunities for students to learn about foods from diverse cultures while continuing to develop important comprehension skills, such as identifying "speed bumps" (words or sections that do not make sense and require clarification).

WRITING

Students continued unpacking their 'Talk for Writing' mentor text before moving into the innovation stage, where they made small but meaningful changes to the original story. Some examples included:

• Niven changing the main character's name from Leo to Bobby.
• Hazel changing the main character's drawing activity to a trip to the beach.
• Evalyn changing the guide character from a golden fox to a turtle.

These innovations allowed students to apply their understanding of story structure while adding their own creativity to the text.

• Summarise by combining the main ideas from a text.
