FROM THE CLASSROOM

It has been a fun week of learning in Year 1! Students returned from the long weekend feeling energised and ready to learn. They have also been engaged in the classroom and have shown enthusiasm and confidence when tackling new learning tasks. Students’ plants in STEM have all grown well and everyone was excited to bring them home this week!!

In Inquiry, students began observing the growth of their seeds and were excited to see the first signs of change. They carefully examined their plants and recorded their observations, noting differences in height, colour, and the development of new shoots. Students have enjoyed tracking the growth of their plants and discussing how water, sunlight, and care help them grow.

In Reading, students began exploring a new mentor text and have been excited to learn and discuss a range of new vocabulary. They enjoyed participating in engaging activities that helped deepen their understanding of word meanings, including identifying synonyms and making connections to familiar words. Students also continued developing their comprehension skills by identifying the main idea of a text, as well as practising how to retell and summarise key events.

In Writing, students began exploring the structure of our persuasive 'Talk for Writing' text by identifying and "boxing up" the different parts of the text. They have started their innovations, using the model text as a guide while changing characters, and key details to create their own unique versions. Students experimented with new ideas while applying the persuasive language features and toolkits they have been learning.

In Phonics, students began Stage 7.3 sounds and were introduced to the /oo/ digraph. They have been learning to recognise, read, and write words containing this new sound through a range of engaging reading and writing activities. They explored how the /oo/ sound appears in different words and are developing confidence in applying their phonics knowledge during literacy tasks.

In Mathematics, students have been revising and consolidating their understanding of multiplication and division. We have revisited key concepts such as equal groups, equal sharing, and using mathematical language including equal, groups, and share. Through a variety of hands-on and engaging activities, students have had opportunities to practise and apply their learning while building confidence in solving multiplication and division problems.
