ECO TEAM | Future Council

Damon Gameau is an Australian actor, director, and documentary filmmaker known for his impactful work in raising awareness on health and environmental issues. He gained widespread recognition for his 2014 documentary That Sugar Film, which explores the effects of sugar on the human body by documenting his own high-sugar diet experiment. The film became the highest-grossing Australian documentary of all time. Gameau followed up with 2040, a documentary envisioning a sustainable future for the planet by 2040. His work often combines personal narrative with scientific research, aiming to inspire positive change on individual and global levels.

Gameau’s upcoming film, Future Council, explores a visionary concept where a diverse group of young people, the ‘Future Council’, is given the power to influence global decisions affecting the environment, technology, and society. Through this council, Gameau highlights the importance of intergenerational dialogue and the role of youth in shaping a sustainable future. The film combines real-world initiatives with speculative storytelling, aiming to inspire viewers to consider the long-term impact of their choices on future generations.

The Frankston High School Eco Team were recently invited to attend a special preview screening of Future Council that formed part of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). The students caught the train into the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) where they watched the film, met and had a chat with director Damon Gameau and mingled with the film’s stars. The Eco Team thoroughly enjoyed the film, commenting that it struck a chord with them and that it was obviously aimed at helping to repair a generational divide. The film is set for theatrical release in January next year. Keep an eye out for a special fundraising screening of the film, organised by the Eco Team, for February 2025.
