3/4 Learning Community

We're following the Gleams!

Inquiry

In Inquiry, for the first four weeks of the term, the ¾ learning community have been learning about the Olympics and how it’s been affected by globalisation. Last week we then split into 4 groups which are; Pollution, Fast Products, Habitat Destruction and Fair Trade. We will now be exploring these areas further in our different groups and looking to provide solutions for the Brisbane Olympics.

                                                                         MATHS

In maths this term the ¾ learning community have been learning about capacity. We were given the challenge to make containers that hold more than 400ml and less than 500ml.

In this process, we started by using a trial and error method. We were then taught a more mathematical way to figure it out. The formula is to times length by width by height. This allowed us to design more accurate containers.  A simple way to write the formula is

L x W x  H. Our design used the combination 5 x 9 x 10 = 450ml.

                                                                                    LITERACY

In literacy the ¾ learning community have been learning about different types of figurative language. We have focused on how to use these creative writing strategies in the narratives we’re working on. Some  examples of figurative language we have learnt are similes, metaphors, personification, exaggeration and alliteration. So far we’ve drafted our setting, characters and story plot and now we’re working on putting as much figurative and descriptive language into the first paragraph of our narrative. We also have been looking for figurative language examples in the books we read.
