Art

Foundation students were introduced to the wonderful world of clay. They had their first experience of using terracotta clay to learn the basics of rolling, wedging/kneading, cutting clay to create ceramic Olympic medals. After creating their clay medal, they patiently waited until they were bisque fired to then paint them in the colours of medals - gold, silver and bronze.

Grade 1/2 students have been learning about the art of mosaics. They have viewed ancient mosaic artworks from the Middle East and explored how patterns influence design. Students have explored making mosaics with paper mosaic squares and glass/plastic tiles.

Grade 3/4 students have been learning about the multi-media artist, Jen Stark. Drawing from the inspiration of her unique art that mimics topography and patterns found in nature, students created their own positive and negative paper sculptures. Using layers of colorful cardstock and foam core, students are explored the interplay between form and space, cutting away sections to reveal dynamic patterns and shapes.

Grade 5/6 Students have been learning about the beautiful art of Kintsugi - the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and powdered gold, emphasising the beauty of imperfection. Students created paper collages, inspired by the process of Kintsugi. Throughout this project, students were introduced to a vast range of new and unfamiliar materials and techniques such as using gold leaf and podge to carefully fill these "cracks" of their paper collages to mimic the Kintsugi powdered gold.
