ES Staff in the Spotlight
Of our 186 staff at Wantirna College, we have 111 teaching staff and 75 education support staff (ES). Primarily the role of our ES is to support teachers and students to achieve the best possible educational outcomes for students. Their jobs vary greatly, with some providing direct support to students in the classroom and some focused on maintaining our beautiful grounds and buildings, whilst others are in the General Office ensuring payments for camps, excursions and programs are processed accordingly.
Our school couldn’t operate without the valuable work they do which is often not as visible as the work our teachers do. However, it is just as vital in ensuring we provide the best possible opportunities for our students. This term, our Staff in the Spotlight will shine a light on the valuable work our ES do and the people in these roles who support our students and teachers.
This week we are spotlighting Courtney Moran.
Courtney has been a wonderful addition to our staff and is doing amazing work leading our Connect program for students in year 7-10. On any given day, Courtney’s office in Mason House is filled with students who are eager to check in with her and have a chat. The work she is doing is making a huge difference in the lives of our young people as she helps them develop real life skills.
What is your role?
Inclusion Engagement Co-ordinator
How long have you worked at Wantirna College?
12 months
Briefly describe your role and responsibilities.
I run the Connect Program for Years 7-10, creating hands-on learning opportunities through school-based projects. I work with students to improve engagement, behaviours, and learning, while working as a student mentor. I also support transition from primary school.
How does the work you do support students and/or teachers?
We facilitate the learning of social-emotional literacy, life-skills, and job-ready skills. Our approach allows for active learning as well as building relationships with teachers, the school and surrounding community.
What is the best thing about Wantirna College?
The diversity of our staff in their skillset, interests and approach.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
Not having enough fidget toys or snacks... Also, not having enough time in the day to get everything done!
If you were the boss of Wantirna College and had an unlimited budget to spend, what would you spend it on and why?
A hands-on learning space that allows student access any time to explore life skills, with space to work on school improvement projects.
If you hosted a dinner party and had to invite 3 Wantirna teachers, who would they be and why?
Mrs Zulfic for the laughs, Miss Mingos for the conversation, and Mrs Rackham for knowledge!
What’s your ideal holiday destination?
Somewhere new. Not too hot but not cold. Quiet, but with enough going on to keep me entertained.
