Grade 3/4 News
Welcome to Week 6 in 3/4 !
During Literacy in Week 4 we explored sundials.
We made our own sundials and tracked the shadows made from the gnomon on our paper plates.
This showed us that throughout the day, the shadow of the gnomon changed around the plate.
The Science behind this is when the Earth rotates on its axis, the Sun moves across the sky, causing objects to cast shadows.
The shadows cast by the gnomon changes to align with the different times around the outside of the circular plate. This is how people used to tell the time before clocks.
Some students have brought this home to share with their families.
During Weeks 5 and 6 we have been exploring Weathering and Erosion.
This has been interesting for the students as we have explored different ways weathering and erosion can occur in our environment.
We have been looking at different places around the world where Weathering and Erosion has taken place.
During Maths, we have been looking at 3D shapes and Angles.
We have been making 3D shapes using play-dough and nets.
Looking at the faces, edges and vertices.
In angles we are discovering angles in our school environment. Do we know if angles are acute, obtuse or right angles?
As of Week 7, the students will be engaging with our Religious Education unit, ‘Circle of Life’.
The unit of work will deal with times of loss or change and what has helped them through this. We understand that for some students this might be about moving, changing school or changing family circumstances, while for others this may be the death of a family member.
Please let us know if we should tread carefully in this area for your child if we are not already aware..
We respect the fact that you are the people who should guide your child through any difficult issues, so we won’t be opening up big discussions and moving into an area of discussion that should be guided by you.
