Term 3  Wrap Up

Literacy and Cultural Learning - Term Highlights

English:

This term, our literacy program has been enriched by embedding Indigenous perspectives across all areas of learning. A key highlight was our novel study of The Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. Through this powerful text, students explored important themes such as Country, belonging, and family. They also deepened their understanding of The Dreaming and the significance of totems in Aboriginal culture. To reflect on their learning, students created vibrant one-pager posters and thoughtful book reviews.

As part of Cultural Week, students turned their attention to the native flora and fauna of Wurundjeri Country. They researched a plant or animal of their choice, then created beautiful botanical-style watercolour artworks paired with creative descriptive writing.

We are incredibly proud of our students' effort, curiosity, and respect throughout the term. We look forward to next term’s exciting focus on Ancient Greece and the Gods, where we’ll continue our journey through history, culture, and storytelling.

Spanish:

This term in Spanish, students have been learning about the lives and contributions of Indigenous Australians through a biography unit. They explored the achievements of inspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander figures, developing drafts and then publishing their own biographies in Spanish. The students really enjoyed this project and gained a deeper appreciation of the talent and resilience of these individuals.

During Cultural Week, our Spanish focus shifted to exploring native Indigenous plants of Wurundjeri Country. Students learned how to label these plants in Spanish and wrote short descriptions of their main features using appropriate and vivid adjectives. This integrated learning has supported both their cultural understanding and Spanish language development.
