Year 4 Urban Gardening

At the start of term two, Year 4 had swimming lessons so we have not been gardening much. We are very happy to be back in the garden now that swimming is over! We have been planting, composting and smashing the compost with big spades.
Today we planted spinach, cosmos and marigolds. Then we moved parsley to another garden bed to stop it from spreading too much.
We have also been shredding scrap paper to go into the compost bins to help make soil and fertilizer for our school garden beds which we have also been weeding. Using scrap paper is a great way to reduce the amount of paper going into the recycling bins and it adds carbon to the compost which is important to help plants grow.

Our 3 Worm Farms
The worm farm works like this: the first layer is to hold the worm juice. The second layer works as a living room for the worms and this is where we put the fruit and vegetable scraps and shredded paper for the worms to eat. The third layer which has a blanket is for them to stay cosy and keep the room dark. We dilute the worm juice with water and feed it to our plants, which helps them grow.
