Reconciliation Week
On the 27th May - 3rd June we learnt about Reconciliation week. We all watched and listened to a song that involved a group of indigenous people and we made a Canva of one of the indigenous people of our choosing that was mentioned in the song. Reconciliation week is a special time each year where Australians learn about and celebrate the history, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Reconciliation week is also a time to learn about each other. It helps us understand the stories and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who are the First Nations people of Australia. Ethan says, "That he liked learning about aboriginals and getting a better understanding of Reconciliation W."

Reading
Year 5s have been busy trying to step up and learn about the Earth and what’s polluting it so they’ve been reading about it. Our mentor text, Earth Matters, has been all about the Earth including global warming. Students have been asking valuable questions about the Earth. Hamish says about the book, “I like the description of the key words like atmosphere.” Amika says in a very encouraging way, “It tells people how to save our planet and how our actions are affecting the atmosphere.”

Mathematics
Over the past two weeks, the Year 5s have been learning about adding and subtracting fractions and rounding money.
When learning about adding and subtracting fractions, we explored many different strategies to work out the answers. It has been a challenge, but we are all doing a great job learning how to solve them.
We’ve also done lots of lessons on rounding money. One task involved rounding food prices to reach a target amount, and another focused on staying within a budget. We practised rounding 5–6 different prices, then comparing the total of the rounded amounts to the actual total.

On the 27th of May the Year 5s had an incursion from Mad About Science. We made a working circuit, with a propeller, light and battery and made an ice pack with vinegar and baking soda, to see how the temperature changed. We also made an empty teabag fly by lighting it on fire but at the end we even got to see a purple fire with iodine. It was really fun, and the circuitry part definitely helped the Year 5’s in their STEAM unit.
In STEAM the Year 5s are making a solar powered boat to get across a pool of water carrying a weight. It will be powered on solar power, with a motor and a propeller. We are completing a STEAM portfolio to include everything we have learned about energy and this will be on display during our STEAM Expo next term. We have had to come up with a team name, complete a flag and logo, and also to make a working boat.
