Around the Grounds - Junior School

Farewell Junior School Building!
We are very well accustomed to change in the Junior School; our students grow and learn so quickly that we are constantly reassessing, rethinking and adjusting. The events of the last few months, however, have taken our flexibility and creativity to new heights! Since the end of last year, our students and staff have adapted to so many changes: moving into portables (Prep-Year 3, administration), moving into Senior School spaces (Library and Technologies, Learning Enrichment, Music) and moving our assemblies into the PAC foyer. Our Preps and Year 1s have moved into new play spaces in the Woodlands area behind their portables. The fencing around the demolition/construction zone has encroached on our Year 2-6 play spaces and separated us from the very well-loved Year 2-4 play equipment, which will disappear along with the old Junior School building. We are so proud of the optimism, patience and good humour that everyone has shown during this period of change. We are also feeling deep gratitude towards Mr Mowat, Ms Sims and everyone in the Music Centre for accommodating our classroom Music lessons and ensemble rehearsals.
The demolition of the old building during the school holidays will mark a dramatic and exciting step towards bringing the dream of a new Junior School into reality. As they return to school in Term 3, the empty space - soon to be filled with the bustle of new construction - will remind our students that they are eyewitnesses to the beginning of a new chapter in Huntingtower’s history. We’re looking forward to what comes next, and we’re ready to change and grow alongside our changing and growing school.

Indonesia Day
Hari Indonesia at Huntingtower Junior School was a wonderful celebration of Indonesian culture. The day began with a lively opening ceremony, highlighted by the beautiful Peacock Dance and the energetic Saman Dance. Students enthusiastically participated in six engaging activities, including Batik making, traditional games, an Angklung workshop, dance workshops and traditional mask making. It was a truly enriching day that allowed everyone to experience and appreciate the beauty and diversity of Indonesian culture in a fun and meaningful way.

Pompom-a-Thon!
The Junior School students got crafty this week making pom poms for our upcoming school production. Classes paired up to create pom poms of all colours and sizes to be used in our musical Finding Nemo.
We were lucky to have Senior School students join us during lunch to lend a hand and help make as many pom poms as possible.
A big thank you to all the families who donated wool. Your generosity helped make this creative day a great success. It was the perfect way to spend a chilly day and a wonderful example of the strong school spirit and teamwork we value at Huntingtower.

Year 2 Literacy Groups
Every Monday, our Year 2 class takes part in Literacy Groups. Students are divided into small groups and rotate through a range of engaging activities, working either independently or with a teacher. Each fortnight, a key comprehension skill is explored in depth with the teacher, providing a valuable opportunity to strengthen reading, listening, and oral comprehension strategies. These sessions support students in becoming more confident and thoughtful readers.

Year 6 Music
Today in music some Year 10/11 students spontaneously joined a Year 6 music class to teach them a concept they have covered in VCE. They all took a group and a concept and ran with it! They then performed for the grade 6’s to help inspire the next generation of musicians. Congratulations for a wonderful term of classroom music!

Year 6 Robotics
Year 6 have spent semester 1 designing, building and coding robots for the Robocup Competition. They've built and coded soccer bots to compete against other schools in a soccer competition. Some students also built dance bots.
