Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Hazel Glen College,
Principals Day
On behalf of the Principal Class Team, I would like to thank our school community for your kind words and warm acknowledgement on Principal’s Day on Friday, 1st August. We are truly grateful for your support.
The role of the Principal Class Team is more than leading the day to day operations. It’s about fostering a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment where our students can thrive, our staff feel supported, and our families are valued partners in learning. Your encouragement reminds us of the privilege we have in working together to make our school the best it can be. I am fortunate to work alongside our dedicated Assistant Principals Kate O'Halloran and Steph Reid.
Camps Thank You
We would like to thank the staff who have attended the Year 4 and Year 5 camps this term. Camps form such an integral part of a student’s education at school by providing opportunities for independence, connection and wellbeing. Camp success relies on our staff who put their hands up to go and support us to run these events. We recognise that our work days in schools on these occasions stretch beyond our usual work hours and the commitment of staff who are willing to take time away from their own families and lives is acknowledged with gratitude. Our students enjoyed the camps and have come back sharing many stories of their experiences.
eSafety Counselling and Support Services
We continue to implement education into our learning programs to support students with safe online use and encourage upstanding and help seeking behaviours to ensure that students are equipped with the necessary tools and skills to navigate their online use. The eSafety Commission provides a range of counselling and support services that families can access if support is required.
Parent Payment Reminders for Extra Curricular Events/Activities
Events organised by the College for students are extracurricular. These events are optional activities that enhance the school experience beyond the standard curriculum. Event, payment and consent details are published on Compass. Timelines must be adhered to, and once the event has closed on Compass, we are unable to take late payment or consent.
When we work with external companies, we have dates in regards to final numbers and other administrative purposes. As a College, we have closing dates to ensure we have enough time to finalise all administrative tasks to ensure our events are safe and successful. If you miss an event payment or consent, your child will not be able to attend the event, and alternative arrangements will be made for your child during that event. If you require assistance with payments, please contact the office as soon as possible. We recommend that you continue to keep updated via Compass Newsfeeds and our College newsletters for upcoming events.
Northern Education Alliance
This year, I have joined the The Northern Education Alliance Network. This is a collaborative network of schools and educational leaders across Melbourne’s north, working together to share expertise, resources, and innovative practices. By partnering through the Alliance, our school benefits from access to high-quality professional learning, shared programs, and collective problem-solving that enhance teaching and learning. This collaboration strengthens outcomes for students, supports staff development, and builds a connected community committed to educational excellence.
School Performance
We have recently received the whole College learning and wellbeing results (NAPLAN and Attitudes to School Student Survey Data). Our students are demonstrating pleasing achievement for student learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy in comparison to state and network results, and now we use these results to evaluate student progress over time and areas of need to build into our curriculum programs.
We continue to be proud of our student achievement, and our College continues to be a high performing school within the local community. Our student survey results are also showing pleasing gains, and we attribute this to our focus on student wellbeing as a whole school approach through positive learning routines, connections and positive climate initiatives to support students both inside and outside of the classroom.
Parent/Carer Survey
Now we have the opportunity to hear feedback from our parent/carer community. The 2025 Parent, Caregiver and Guardian Opinion Survey will be available to complete online from Monday 18th August to Friday 19th September 2025. The survey seeks feedback on school climate, community engagement in learning, teaching practices for student engagement and outcomes, and attitudes towards school attendance.
School Crossing Safety
The safety of our school children is a top priority. School crossings have special rules and are often a workplace for our School Crossing Supervisors. Your actions on and around school crossings keep our community safe.
Safe behaviours at school crossings
As kids travel to and from school, it’s important for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be aware and take extra care during these busy times. Following the road rules at school crossings doesn’t just keep our community safe, it is also the law.
To help keep our kids safe, it’s important for drivers to:
- Slow down around school crossings at a speed slow enough to stop safely, if necessary.
- Stop if a hand held “Stop” sign is displayed and you must give way when school crossings flags are displayed.
- Stop and wait until the school crossing is clear of all pedestrians including supervisors.
- Stop if a child or adult is about to cross or is crossing, even if there is no crossing supervisor.
- Never overtake a vehicle stopping or stopped at the crossing.
- Never let children get in or out of your vehicle when stopped waiting at a school crossing.
- Respect School Crossing Supervisors, they’re trained to support children’s safety.
- Always watch out for children near schools and if you see a school crossing, use it.
At school crossings, all road users need to be alert, including pedestrians. Always look and listen for approaching traffic from each direction before crossing. Pedestrians need to be sure that drivers or riders have seen them and are stopping.
We are still accepting 2026 Prep Enrolments
Please let any families that you know who are looking at schools for next year for their Prep child that we are still accepting enrolments and would welcome them into our nuturing school community.
We are a proud, high performing local government school offering a Primary Years education from Prep to Year 6. Hazel Glen College Primary Years offers a tranquil learning setting with college learning facilities. We prioritise class sizes and our teachers invest in student learning and wellbeing.
We hope that you can help with promoting our school to the local community.
