Cultural Understanding

The Cultural Understanding School Improvement Team have been working on expanding our school's knowledge of significant cultural commemorations and celebrations this term.

During Week 11 each class will meet with their Social Squad buddy class to engage in some learning and activities about NAIDOC week. They will listen to stories by First Nations people, reflect and respond to questions, and complete an activity related to this year's theme.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It is also the name of the week-long celebration that honours the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The NAIDOC Week 2025 theme is "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy". This theme celebrates the achievements of the past and the bright future ahead, powered by the strength of young leaders, the vision of communities, and the legacy of ancestors.  This year also marks 50 years of the week-long celebrations.

NAIDOC Week is a significant event in Australia, celebrated by Indigenous communities and Australians across the country, and even overseas.  It's a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  Australians also have the opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Students are continuing to build on their understanding of these important dates and events with conversations and activities in the classroom, not just now but throughout the year.
