Specialists - Performing Arts (Mrs Duke & Kate)

Last week in Music and Performing Arts, students were diving into and learning about the exciting world of musical form! Through active listening, movement, and singing, we’ve been exploring how songs are structured. Learning about verses and chorus, repeating patterns, contrasting sections, and echo or call-and-response phrases.

To bring these concepts to life, students have been learning and practicing songs with a variety of musical forms. One of the highlights for our younger learners was "The Popcorn Song," an energetic echo song that had everyone singing, laughing, and moving. To make it even more engaging, we brought out the parachute, which acted as our "hot pan"—a fun and visual way to act out the popping motion of the popcorn in the song. Students bounced the parachute to the beat and echoed the lyrics with great enthusiasm!

Meanwhile, our senior students took on more advanced examples of musical form through call-and-response exercises, showing great focus and confidence when performing to the class. They also had a go at the classic clapping game "Miss Mary Mack," exploring rhythm, timing, and teamwork. It was both a nostalgic and skill-building activity that had everyone smiling.

We’re so proud of how our students are growing as musicians—developing listening skills, understanding musical structure, and most importantly, expressing themselves joyfully through music and movement!
