Learning Specialists

Everyone is a Learner!

What a huge term it has been for our students and their learning. It has also been huge for our teachers as well. With the revised Victorian Curriculum this year, teachers have been making sure these changes are evident in planners and, therefore, the classrooms.

In June, our PLC leaders and myself attended a regional conference run by the Maths Association of Victoria. The day was extremely valuable with different aspects of the new curriculum and its implications for classroom teaching.

One area of the curriculum that has been made significantly more explicit is Mathematical Modelling - taking a real-life problem and using maths to solve it. A perfect task would have no immediate way of solving it. Students are encouraged to use what they know to then make assumptions to find a solution (there is always more than one). Once a solution has been found they then need to apply it to the problem to see if it is possible. For example, if their answer is 2.5 people, they need to decide whether it needs to be 2 or 3 people.

Our team worked together to solve a problem using what we had learnt. It was a great collaborative day of learning!

Wishing everyone a wonderful, restful break!
