Cora Wilson and Layne Trevena - Trek Kokoda
Over the holidays, we completed the historic Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. This 136km trek not only tested our physical endurance but also gave us a memorable experience of a lifetime.
The Kokoda Trail holds immense historical significance as the site of a pivotal World War II campaign. We had the unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of our Australian soldiers who once traversed these rugged mountains against the Japanese. The hike was not just about conquering the muddy grounds or trippy jungle roots, it was about understanding the sacrifices made and the history that shaped our world.
Throughout the Trek, we passed through many villages along the way where the kids were as happy to see us as we were to stop for a break. Nothing you could do could wipe the smile from these kids faces especially when they know you have presents for them.
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was the Dawn Service at Isurava, where we gathered early in the morning in quiet reverence. However, the true highlight came when we heard our porters sing their national anthem. Their angelic voices encapsulated the spirit of resilience and unity - mateship, truly embodying the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels.
This experience was more than a physical challenge; it was an emotional and educational journey that deepened our understanding of our country's history. We came back not only with stories and mates we made along the track but also with a newfound appreciation for the sacrifices of the past and the strength of camaraderie.
Congratulations Cora and Layne!!
