Hands on Learning at Kildare Campus

At St Joseph’s Kildare Campus, the Hands on Learning initiative continues to thrive this semester with the introduction of the Cafe program, alongside the ongoing Build program launched last term. Both small group programs, facilitated by Save the Children, and taught by St Joseph’s artisan teachers and support staff, aim to assist in students' social and emotional development through practical projects.

The Hands on Learning: Build program, currently run by Rob Mai and Tyler Phillips, is well-established at St Joseph’s College, Brigidine Campus and has been instrumental in students’ growth. Loved projects over the years include crafted outdoor furniture, installing a pizza oven, maintaining gardens, vegetable beds and enhancing campus decor with the colourful pencils installation at the front of Cill Dara house.

Meanwhile, the Cafe program started at Brigidine Campus last year with a small biscuit business for staff, teaching culinary skills, stock management and also cooking and preparing a variety of lunches to expand their skills. This year, led by Vanessa Mahoney and assisted by Matilda Chiso and Katie Kuluris, the Cafe has diversified and grown to prepare meals for staff, enhancing students' abilities and becoming a popular addition to campus life.

At St Joseph’s Kildare Campus, the Hands on Learning Build team, lead by Matthew Butler and Gavin Deller were quickly undertaking projects, including a Gaga Pit and a Nine Square in the Air game frame.

This semester a Hands on Learning Cafe program was introduced, with Geordie Butler and Mackenzie Southern supporting the students in the kitchen, meaning we now have full programs running on each Campus.

These initiatives underscore St Joseph’s dedication to fostering student talents, building community, and promoting personal development through hands-on educational experiences.
