Performing Arts Term 3 Overviews

Prep

This term, preps are exploring the world of dance through movement games and moving to music. They will learn about why people dance and some of the different dances that belong to different cultures. The students will copy and extend ideas presented by another dancer, teacher, film or a peer, while developing an awareness of and taking responsibility for safe dance practice. They will also explore using props in dance such as ribbons and scarves. By the end of the term the students will have learnt a full dance to music and will perform it in their class.

Year 1

In term 3, year 1 students are introduced to elements of music, using body and percussion instruments, and Vocal-pitch/pace/in singing. Students are then introduced to beat, tempo and rhythm in singing and instrument playing.

Year 2

Students in grade 2 are focusing on dance this term, identifying and copying locomotor and non-locomotor movements in dance they have watched and performed. For the first 5 weeks the students will be learning a class dance that the teacher has created for them to learn, and then in weeks 5-10 they will learn the skills and create ideas to make up their own choreography in small groups to incorporate into the class dance.  They will begin to question why people perform certain moves, whether to tell a story or express an emotion.

Year 3

In term 3, Year 3 students focus on identifying timbre and the 4 different clefs in music, using instruments to explore timbre, reading a series of clefs and creating body movements while listening to music.

Year 4

Students in year 4 will be exploring the performing arts area of music. They will be playing the ukulele and using their voice to explore the different dynamics present in music, focusing on using proper terms like ‘forte’ and ‘piano’. They will also be learning about timbre, or the colour, of sound. This will have students assessing sound and assigning terms such as ‘light’, ‘bright’, ‘dark’, and ‘heavy’. These learnings will be applied to both playing and singing of the song for the term “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King.

Year 5

Throughout the term, students in Year 5 will be studying music through both a practical and theoretical lens. They will look at various elements of music, in particular structure and rhythm. The students will learn to identify different parts of a song, such as a bridge, a chorus, verses, intro and outros. For rhythm, the students will develop their skills as well as learning the specific notation to represent different beats such as a quaver and semibreve. They will then apply the theory to their learning of personal songs and a class song, both on keyboard and vocally.

Year 6

Students in Year 6 will be studying music in term 3. They will be looking at various elements of music to supplement their playing of different instruments. Examination of melodies, both sung and performed on instruments, will allow the students to identify how a melody gives focus to a song. In addition, they will also be exploring tempo, looking at how speed impacts upon a song. The students will then apply the theory to their learning of personal songs and a class song, both on keyboard and vocally.

Year 7

Students in Year 7 will have the opportunity to extend their learning on an instrument of their choice. They will develop a deeper understanding of their instruments including specific techniques to progress their learning and ability to play with greater control, clarity and accuracy.  Students will also create a folio of listening journals and begin to identify the elements of music and how composers use these elements to express their intentions.
