MENTAL STRATEGIES WE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING ON FOR WEEK 1 & 2 of TERM 3 AT SFS!
The strategies children will be focusing on over the next two weeks are:
YEAR LEVEL | STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME |
Foundation |
Forward number word sequence by ones within the range 0-30 -Start at 0 and count forwards by 1s to 30 -Can you start at any number between 0-30 and count forwards by 1’s beyond 30.
|
Year 1 |
Counting forwards and backwards by 10’s within the range 0-130 (starting from any number) At this age many children can confidently count backwards and forwards by 10s from 0-100 and 100-0. The challenge is then for them to be able to do so starting at any number. This requires them to recognise that a pattern also exists when they are not starting from a decuple (e.g. 10,20,20,40). Practice this mental strategy at home by asking a family member to call out a number between 0-130 and then practice counting backwards or forwards either orally or by recording the counting sequence on paper. |
Year 2 |
Counting forwards by 10’s within the range 0- 1000 (starting from any number) -As a family member to choose a number between 0 -1000. Can you start at that number and count forwards by 10s. Practice doing this orally as well as recording the counting sequence on paper.
|
Year 3 |
Doubling – Using our knowledge of doubling to assist with addition and subtraction
|
Year 4 & 5 |
Practice Multiplication & Division Facts to 10 x 10. Practice multiplication and division facts at home over the next 2 weeks. Can you write them out in 1 minute – can you automatically recall a fact asked by a family member. Can you explain the relationship between multiplication and division – how does this help you with improving your automatic recall of facts? |
Year 6 |
Count by fractions When counting by fractions identify which fraction you are counting with –halves, third, eights etc. Do this by looking at the denominator, even if the fraction is a mixed numeral. Once this has been identified you can then start counting up with the numerator. |
MATHS IN THE OLYMPICS
The Paris Olympic Games begin this weekend, bringing much excitement and inspiration to audiences worldwide.
While we will be cheering on our favourite athletes and will be amazed by many sporting achievements over the coming weeks, there is also a fascinating world of math behind the scenes.
Math is integral to the Olympics, from scoring and timing to analysing performance data. Here are some examples where math is used:
- Scoring Systems: Many sports rely on precise scoring systems. For example, diving uses math equations to calculate scores based on difficulty and execution.
- Time: in sports like Swimming and Athletics, athletes race times are used to determine the winner. Times are measured in minutes and seconds and recorded using decimal notation.
- Ordinal Number: Who cane first, second, third, fourth, last?
- Measurement: In many sports like long jump, high jump, discus, javalin and shot put, the length or height an athlete can throw or jump is measured in meters and centimetres.
- Statistics: Athletes and coaches use statistical analysis to track performance metrics, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions about training and strategies.
- Geometry: Understanding angles and trajectories is essential in sports like archery, shooting, and even soccer, where the optimal angle of a kick can determine a goal.
While watching the Olympics at home with your family see if you can ‘spot the Maths’ in the Olympic Games for different sports. Discuss this with your family. What do you notice?, name the maths you see, how is this used in the Olympics for different sports?

🤩OUR JOURNEY BEGINS FOR THIS TERM IN CLINIC 3 MATHEMATICS 🤩
This week in Clinic 3 Maths has been an incredible journey for our young mathematicians! We've been diving deep into the world of fractions, mastering the art of adding and subtracting them. Starting with the basics of fractions from the same family (you know, those common denominators), we've been unleashing our skills on unlike denominators too!
But here’s where it gets really exciting: we’ve been tackling some mind-bending, open-ended word problems that really get our brains firing! It’s been all about exploring different strategies and solutions, sparking rich discussions that dive into the "whys" behind our math moves. Trust me, the energy in the room has been electric with all the discoveries and breakthroughs our kids are making!
Math in this clinic isn’t just numbers—it’s about curiosity, problem-solving, and a whole lot of excitement!
🌟THE POWER OF ARRAYS : A JOURNEY INTO CLINIC 1 MATHEMATICS 🌟
This week in Clinic 1, our young mathematicians dove into the exciting world of multiplication through a hands-on exploration of partitioning arrays! The students began by discovering what an array is and how to draw them to match a multiplication sentence. Using colorful Unifix blocks and pieces of string, they worked together to partition the arrays, creating a dynamic learning experience. They didn't just stop at one multiplication sentence—our students took it a step further by creating two additional multiplication sentences that equaled the original product.
It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and creativity as they manipulated the blocks and string to uncover different multiplication possibilities. This hands-on approach not only reinforced their understanding of multiplication but also made learning a fun and engaging experience.Through this hands-on and engaging method, they are mastering multiplication in a whole new way!
We’re thrilled to watch our students grow and develop their mathematical skills through such interactive and collaborative activities!
🧐MULTIPLYING MARVELS : EXCITEMENT OF CLINIC 2 MATHEMATICS!🧐
In Clinic Two mathematics, our young learners have embarked on an exhilarating journey into the world of multiplication! Over the past two weeks, they've been exploring deep into a treasure trove of engaging and effective methods that make math come alive. Picture this: arrays, where numbers come together in neat rows and columns, transforming abstract concepts into tangible patterns. Then there’s the distributive property, a secret code that breaks down big multiplication challenges into bite-sized, conquerable parts. But wait, there's more! Enter the area model, a visual masterpiece that turns multiplication into a thrilling exploration of rectangles and their hidden secrets. And let's not forget the ingenious strategy of doubling and halving, where numbers magically simplify themselves with every calculation.
Through these immersive techniques, our budding mathematicians aren’t just crunching numbers—they’re unlocking the mysteries of how numbers dance and play together in the grand symphony of mathematics. Keep up the extraordinary work, adventurers of arithmetic—you're rewriting the rules and shaping the future, one multiplication masterpiece at a time!
🌍ROOTS REVEALED: EXPLORING OUR FAMILY STORIES AND THEIR ORIGINS IN LS2 SENIORS!🌍
As the children delved into the thrilling concept of Discovery, they embarked on an exciting journey to uncover the origins of their family stories. Working together in homegroups, they used a string to trace their family's paths from countries around the world all the way to Melbourne. The learning space buzzed with enthusiasm as children eagerly located different countries on the world map, sparking vibrant discussions about why their parents and families chose to move from these places.
They pondered questions like, "Why did they come to Australia instead of a closer country?". This captivating task had sparked lively conversations all week, with children eager to share and listen to their peers' fascinating family stories. The excitement and curiosity of these children has been contagious amongst their peers and teachers, making for an exciting learning experience and unit of work this term.
