Year 5/6 News

Literacy

In this unit, our learning is strongly connected to our Inquiry approach. Students have been exploring cautionary tales through a Greek Mythology lens and are currently exploring the purpose of allegory by asking questions, making connections, and thinking deeply about how stories communicate bigger ideas and messages. They are building their vocabulary, sharing personal experiences to strengthen understanding, and analysing key story elements such as plot and resolution.

Through this process, students are inquiring into how authors craft meaning beneath the surface of a text. They will then apply their understanding by planning, drafting, and editing their own allegory, before reflecting on their learning. This encourages critical thinking, creativity, and thoughtful reflection — all key parts of our Inquiry learning model. Students are also working on sentence structure and exploring compound sentences and how we can use them to add detail to our writing. In word work we have been exploring how affixes can change the meaning of a word and the various spelling rules asscociated with adding prefixes and suffixes.

Inquiry:

In our current learning, students are exploring how the ancient Greeks used myths to make sense of the natural world. We are focusing on the story of Demeter and Persephone, a well-known Greek myth that was traditionally used to explain the changing seasons and the farming cycle. Students are learning to confidently retell the key events of the myth, identify how the story connects to seasonal changes and agricultural patterns, and write a clear, well-structured summary that includes the correct sequence of events and the most important ideas. Through this unit, students deepen their understanding of agriculture by exploring it in connection with Greek mythology. They also strengthen their comprehension skills and develop their ability to communicate ideas clearly, thoughtfully, and effectively in writing.
