Yarning Circle Opening Ceremony

On Monday, the 24th of February 2025, our school had our Yarning Circle Opening Ceremony. Beginning at 9:45am, we met our special guests Uncle Darrell, Aunty Carol, Mrs Siokos (Director, Educational Leadership) and the Bonnyrigg Public School Aboriginal Dance group. We learnt that the Yarning Circle is a place where everyone is free and welcome to share their stories as equals.
A few of the things which were a part of the assembly were the smoking ceremony to purify the Yarning Circle, the Bonnyrigg Public School student’s traditional performance and Uncle Darrell’s sharing of traditional artefacts. He had brought various unique artefacts and his friendly blue tongued lizard named ‘Bluey’.
Our school’s Yarning Circle Opening Ceremony was a great celebration of a new space for all of our students and special guests. We enjoyed learning and hearing about Aboriginal culture. This included how to use and properly hold specific items. The sharing of connection to country and the way of living for Aboriginal people was extremely valuable to our school community. We can't wait to start using the new Yarning Circle.
