Summer Holiday Program Highlights - Level Up!

Here's a Recap

During the Summer Holidays was all about levelling up the fun at TheirCare Boroondara. The three weeks where an engaging and enriching experience for everyone involved in our program. Throughout the three weeks, we provided various learning environments daily including creative, physical health, scientific, experiential, natural, cultural, and two cooking experiences (each week) and excursions to the Timezone, Rivoli Cinemas, Glow Golf and Archery Attack. Each day was packed with exciting, fun and engaging experiences. During the first week, the highlights included making Butterfly, hosting our own Game Show, seeing Moana 2, Airbrush Octopus Art, playing Laser Tag, Arcade games and baking Butterfly Cakes. As always, educators and children worked in collaboration to design additional activities to maximise the fun and ensure all children were engaged in the program. In week two, the children enjoyed making Salt Dough Ornaments and Paper Sunglasses, seeing Sonic the Hedgehog 3, playing golf and grounders, baking tasty baked goods like the Hedgehog Slice we made and learning all about water safety with Haley. During the last week, we didn't want to say goodbye to the new friends we made, coming from other schools. The major highlights of this week included, making Oatmeal cookies and experiencing Virtual Reality games for the first time, Drip Art, Lego building competition, Cup Rockets and learning how to use a bow and arrow.

What's Been On

In Week 4, we continued our term’s theme of Travelling Around the World by learning more about the country we live in and the original custodians of this land through “Connecting to Country.” Throughout the week, we tasted indigenous food, culture, and traditions, respectfully. On Monday, the highlight was listening to The Koolik Sisters’ story in our mini yarn circle and making our own Fruit Kebabs for afternoon tea. We even have a new favourite game, Buroinjin (like Rugby) an indigenous game. Tuesday, we tried out a traditional recipe, Three Sisters Soup, it was quite tasty and very different from the soups we normally have. Wednesday brought up another challenge for the mini chefs during Let’s Cook, when our Native Rosemary Focaccia turned out terribly because we kneaded it too long, it was as tough as a rock! This week we also have begun colouring in a collaborative mural to pay our respect to the original custodians of this land.

On Thursday, we had so much fun going to the school barbeque and getting a few tasty treats. All week long, the children explored cultural sensitivity and respect for another, discovering the joy of learning and appreciating each other’s backgrounds. Additional activities—like listening to music from Aboriginal artists, making our own Rainbow Serpent, playing sport games like Chiba and Emu, baking some Damper and decorating our Reflection Journal —rounded out a respectful, fun and educational program.

These experiences were part of our carefully planned schedule designed in collaboration with the children and parents/carers, ensuring everyone felt included and engaged. By integrating cultural and social-emotional learning, we enriched the week with hands-on fun, creativity, and a sense of belonging for all.

Last week, we continued our term’s theme of Travelling Around the World by learning more about diversity and this week this was through “Ancient Egypt.” Throughout week five, we tasted Egyptian food, culture, traditions and beliefs. As I was unwell and was not at school, I was unable to share the highlights from Monday to Wednesday morning. Wednesday afternoon the children and I invented our own new game “Red Sea” this was a game like the games we often play (The Floor is Lava and Grounders) and has quickly become a new favourite. This game we based on the story Prince of Egypt.

On Thursday, the highlight was making our Honey Sweet Cakes as part of the Let’s Cook was a hit among the different ages. All week long, the children explored cultural sensitivity and respect for another, discovering the joy of learning and appreciating each other’s backgrounds. Additional activities, making our own Split Pin Mummy Paper Crafts, 3D Pyramids, making Canopic Air-Dry Clay Crafts, creating chalk art outside and baking some Egyptian Flatbread and decorating our Reflection Journal —rounded out a respectful, fun and educational program.

These experiences were part of our carefully planned schedule designed in collaboration with the children and parents/carers, ensuring everyone felt included and engaged.
